Misleading to have kids believe that slavery ...
was fun. Nothing fun about Human Trafficking. Do Better.

Harriet Tubman was a happy slave
Several passages in this book are deeply concerning and I want to bring this to anyone attention who is considering buying this book. The message/undertone suggests that being oppressed and enslaved is what you make of it. Even those who were enslaved should learn to feel sorry for their oppressors without any context our guidance on what that means or looks like. It a simplistic, and inadvertently racist, message to send to children. I worry that children (especially Black children) will get the message that being oppressed is what you make of it.If you are looking for books to target for black history month, I recommend finding books that were written by black authors for a more athunetic and nuanced perspective.

Dangerously indoctrinating
As seen in the added photos, this book romanticizes slavery by portraying Ms Tubman as “happy” as an enslaved child. This is a very powerful (and insidious) way to indoctrinating both white and Black children to accept white supremacy. For this reason, this book is not only bad, it is dangerous. Find a better Tubman biography.

Whitewashing of history
There is one good thing about this book: it serves as a wake up call to parents to pay attention to what your school is teaching your children. History is being rewritten and spoon fed to our children. Enslaved Africans were never "happy" to be enslaved, their children weren't carefree, having fun, playing and fishing outside all summer. To describe them as naked and never wearing shoes intentionally dehumanizes them by giving the impression they wanted to be this way- like animals or savages. The author, the editor, the publishing company, the schools and the teachers are all guilty and complicit for putting this in the hands of children.

Questionable Content
I love most books from the Who HQ series, but I have to say that the content of this book is disturbing. There is language in the book that gives the impression that enslaved children had fun, carefree lives. I’m also not comfortable with the constant referencing of people as “slaves” rather than enslaved people or people held against their will. It gives the impression that “slave” was a social class - without the sting of it being a government inflicted and forced state.I know these books are for kids, but we can teach them the truth in a way that is age appropriate.

An embarrassing confession...
These are "supposed" to be for kids but I discovered this series by accident at Target recently and have been buying them for me, and I'm over 40. I am very ignorant, and not proud of it. Academics was never my forte. I have a problem learning things when they are presented in a dry, boring way. I've always thought learning about history would be much more engaging if you could find out more personal details about a person, know more about their human experience. This book on Harriet Tubman is exactly that, and I truly enjoyed it. I loved the details about her childhood, her marriages, and things like how she got the scar on her forehead. These little books are the perfect size. You can easily throw them in your purse and do a little reading here and there. I can take them into the bathtub with me. They are just enough on a given subject to give you some basic knowledge and interesting details without being too much. I am so happy to see all the different ones available, and plan on buying many more to learn about various things. They are so affordable. I love all the pictures, I love the cartoony covers. Learning does NOT have to be boring!!

These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4

Great for book report
Great book, easy read. My daughter has difficulty with reading and this was an easy way to learn about Harriet Tubman without causing stress due to difficulty with reading level. She was able to easily understand the content and process. Author did a good job of retelling a historical event in a fun, interesting way for kids.

A good introduction to a courageous woman and an important topic for older primary school children
Harriet Tubman was the first woman to act as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, the network of contacts that enabled slaves to escape from the Southern states in the years leading up to the American Civil War.Her story is little known in Britain, but the issues are covered well here and woven into a readable and inspiring narrative in a style similar to the Scholastic series "My Story" in this reasonably priced American edition. It's ideal for introducing Key Stage 2 (9-11 year old) children to the topic of slavery in an absorbing and thought-provoking way.
