Great resource book

This book has tons of high quality photos that will give you dozens of ideas. The step-by-step is only so-so but good enough to get you through a build. There are some details left out that you have to figure out yourself. I like the artist profiles. Overall this is an excellent book. Highly recommended for the photos alone.

I recently bought 3 books on this subject, downloaded another, and I have a vast collection of downloaded web sites and videos. downloaded videos: these CGB video guys are like your weird uncle who lives on a long dirt road on a mountain. way too many weird idiosyncrasies. web sites: written by the same weird uncles. This book, and a web page found at The Art Of Manliness web site, are the only two sources that provide this essential pearl of information: You want the neck to be level with the top of the box. to achieve this goal you must notch out a portion of the neck as deep as the lid, the length of the lid, starting and ending exactly where the lid starts and ends. Then you must cut a second recess inside this "lid recess" about 3/16" / 4 mm in from each end of the lid recess, , about 1/8" / 3 mm deep, to give the lid room to vibrate. Some books show pictures but do not point this out. Some books mention the lid recess but do not describe it. This is the one book that both tells you and shows you this essential information. In my hardly humble opinion this fact alone makes this book essential reading for a potential CGB builder.

My son plays all variety of guitars and ukuleles and has been interested in cigar box ukuleles for a while. I thought I'd get him one for Christmas... until I saw how expensive they were. My son had expressed interest in building his own once when we were in a studio watching someone build them. So... I got my son the book instead. He loved it, read through it on the spot, and would love to do it, but he'd need a ton of specialized tools he doesn't have, and, of course, time. He liked the book and thought it was interesting, but it is probably more a book for those ready to start, not people who are interested and would "like to do that someday." The directions in the book were clear, though, and the photographs really useful! I can see my son doing this, eventually!

The purchase of the book via Amazon was seamless, great seller. The book itself is THE BEST BOOK I've read (out of 5 or 6) on building and appreciating the Cigar Box Guitar. Can't stress that enough, this book is the one to buy if you are interested in building CBGs and the people who build and play them. Great Book.

This is a very well done book! From the beautiful photographs to the bits and pieces of construction. A high quality made book. Suitable gift for that budding luthier that likes folk instruments. The book's focus is more on the current state of this venerable instrument instead of it's history. It arrived in the Amazon cardboard shipping package (that protects it from damage and is totally recyclable!) in perfect condition!

Really good book on CBG building. Includes interviews with builders, and interesting info on the history of CBG. The three building examples the author gives are, while fine, are a little more technical than what is required of a first time builder. I'd advise you to check out YouTube first & check the how-to videos; it is really quite easy, it is just a 1x2 in (or on) a cigar box, with strings.

I have purchased this for a friend who made a three stringer and upon receiving this book has gone on to make a one stringer and is now making a Diddly-Bow with intentions to follow that with a Tea-Chest, Upright Bass. He has hand carved the necks himself and found it easy to find other components, all at a reasonable price for a lifetime of enjoyment with friends. This has been a very positive purchase - Skeif
