The pants will be completely useless, but it is too late to send back ...
The jacket is lovely and fits just as a 40S should. Why this jacket comes with size 34 waist pants makes no sense to me. The pants will be completely useless, but it is too late to send back for a larger size and then to have the jacket altered. Pretty disappointed, as a similar set was $50 less elsewhere.
