Big Ass Spider!

Pure awesomeness! Rarely will you find a film, particularly a comedy, which combines near-perfect writing with near-perfect direction with near-perfect acting. But "Big Ass Spider" (BAS) seems to be the perfect storm. But in a very good way.I did something that I rarely do: buy a movie. But I wanted to see BAS -- the reviews were really high from the critics, and I had seen a promo that looked really good -- and so when I went to rent this, I realized that for about twice the price, I could own this bad boy. And if you think about it, if you go to a movie theater -- something that I haven't done in about four years, as it seems to be more dangerous than the spider in this film, what with people getting shot for doing minor things such as texting -- and there are at least two of you, it costs, what? like 12 bucks? And that would be a matinee without any goodies. For $9.99 I can burn a hole in my Comcast monthly download maximum as many times as I want watching this laugh-fest. At least up to my 250 gigs.So, while sitting in the safety of my own home, not having to worry about some other theater-goer going all postal on me. . . I got to sit back and see all of the awesomeness. Sure, the spider is pretty Bad Ass, and said spider is pretty big, but I'm assuming that, unlike the film "The Ring" as an example, that same spider can't come through the screen and eat my face like that mean little girl with unresolved mommy issues. But I can sit back, eat some popcorn, and watch that spider eat other peoples' faces, and I can laugh.And you'll laugh plenty here too, just like I did, if you rent this film. Better yet: why not buy it? It's only twice as much, and you'll get to witness pure awesomeness. Over and over.

Good movie hadn't watched it in awhile

I've always been a big sci-fi fan, books and movies. Perhaps because I started my love of sci-fi from books, when I was young, the main thing I enjoyed in a movie was the story. But as I grew older, I began to learn more about, and appreciate, things like plot integrity, acting, directing, photography, etc.If you're a person who only enjoys the story, as I used to be, then Big Ass Spider will probably strike you as a well done 'B' sci-fi movie. If you don't enjoy strongly tongue-in-cheek humor, you may not enjoy it.But if you do, and have learned to appreciate more subtle production qualities in movies, Big Ass Spider will be an absolute delight! The script, acting, directing, innuendo, down to the tiny nuances, are dead on! I rarely laugh out loud when watching movies, but this one had me in stitches. For the first time ever, in scene after scene, I asked myself "how could this have possibly been done better?"Clearly, the producer & director purposely chose a typical 'B' sci-fi movie story as their vehicle, and then they nailed it to the wall! The special effects are typical 'B' movie effects. But, in my opinion, a $100 million SFX budget would actually be a negative here, because, just like every other detail, it perfectly matches the chosen theme and style.Unfortunately, some of the people who have reviewed this movie missed the point. This movie was clearly made with tongue firmly in cheek. The apparent 'flaws' are there intentionally, for humor.I highly and enthusiastically recommend this movie, and extend my unbridled admiration and appreciation to those who made it!

Love this movie. This was the best price. Was nervous about buying used but DVD was in great shape. Really glad I bought it.

I first saw part of this film on the Sci Fi channel; I liked what I saw and ordered the DVD from Amazon. This movie was even better than I hadexpected, with a pretty good cast, superior special effects, especially blending CGI with what appeared to be stop motion animation, and a lotof humor, which seems to be the norm today in Sci Fi pics since TREMORS. The action was terrific, with lots of Angelinos getting munched andbuildings being pulverized. It was a spider banquet in one park (Griffith?) and LA's tallest building turned into a spider baby berthing hospital. Ithought the producers did a magnificent job blending the giant bug images in with live action street and building scenes. This certainly is one ofthe better movies that has come along for television in some time. Sort of a companion to GRABBERS which I loved. And Chubbo the hero gothis blondie chick at the end. I like happy endings. As a NYC resident I did not mind seeing LA get trashed again. Earthquakes, Martians, Spiders,giant Ants, Volcanoes and Kronos: not a bad day! But this one is a winner! FIVE STARS! Kronos, by the way, was a big alien machine from the1950s the sucked up all LAs power until it was short-circuited! Enjoy!

I saw the first three minutes of Big Ass Spider! on You Tube. I was impressed with what I saw, but I really didn't think the movie could maintain the level of scares throughout. I was wrong, thank goodness! I yelled out during the morgue scene with the clueless hospital employee. The scenes in the air ducts with Greg Grunberg and the scurrying arachnid gave me the willies, and big Spidey's rampage in the park was terrifying. Big Ass Spider delivered, even when it was clearly toying with the audience. That scene with the little girl retrieving her ball is the first example one that comes to mind.Speaking of Grunberg, he was perfect in this movie. He gives a truly Oscar winning performance, Golden Globe caliber at the very least. It's always a pleasure to see Ray Wise on screen, and Lombardo Boyar cracked me up with his reaction to all the horrific stuff going on: "Just describe it to me---I don't wanna see it!" Boyar and Grunberg have real chemistry. I wouldn't mind seeing them work together again in a sequel.If you're looking for a scary movie that also delivers big time laughs, look no further than Big Ass Spider!Greg, you can send the check for the amount we discussed to my Swiss bank account. Fun ride for a late Saturday night

Big Ass Spider, is one of the best Syfy style of films to come around, in a long time. Greg Grunberg, does an incredible job of making audiences believe the storyline and provides an abundance of comedy, throughout. HIGHLY recommended.

Auf »Big Ass Spider!« bin ich rein zufällig bei Amazon gestoßen, und die Beschreibung hat mich neugierig werden lassen. Seit Jahren schon habe ich die Spinnen-Horrorkomödien  Arachnophobia  und  Arac Attack - Angriff der achtbeinigen Monster , die wirklich schön schräg und witzig sind. Zwar reicht »Big Ass Spider!« meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz an diese beiden Filme heran, doch finde ich ihn trotz allem gut gelungen.Laut Blu-ray Hülle wird der Film gar als eine Mischung aus  Starship Troopers - Ungeschnittene Fassung [Blu-ray ] und  Tarantula [Blu-ray ] beschrieben, doch kann ich dies nicht wirklich untermauern. Starship Troopers handelt von außerirdischen Käfern und dem Krieg gegen diese auf ihrem Heimatplaneten, während es bei Tarantula um eine künstlich mutierte Tarantel geht – bei »Big Ass Spider!« geht es zwar um eine Gen-manipulierte Spinne nicht-irdischen Ursprungs, doch das ist auch schon alles, was sie mit den beiden genannten Klassikern gemein hat.Für mich ist »Big Ass Spider!« eine durchaus gelungene Komödie, die das Genre ein wenig auf die Schippe nimmt. Dies liegt einerseits in den Darstellern begründet, die wirklich eine gute, humorvolle Performance an den Tag legen, aber auch an den CGI und der passenden – weil nicht unbedingt wirklich passenden – Hintergrundmusik. Alles ist von vorn herein als Komödie gedacht, und nimmt sich daher nicht wirklich ernst.Dabei greifen die Macher auf zumindest vier nicht unbekannte Schauspieler zurück:GREG GRUNBERG habe ich das erste Mal in  Heroes - Die komplette Serie (23 Discs)  bewusst wahrgenommen, wo er in der Rolle des Matt Parkman zu sehen ist. In »Big Ass Spider!« spielt er die Hauptrolle des Kammerjägers Greg, der nicht ganz verstehen kann, weshalb er keine Freundin hat. Er ist der klassische Anti-Held und Sympathieträger, was sehr gut zu dem Film passt. Ein typischer Alleskönner wäre hier definitiv fehl am Platz gewesen.RAY WISE dürften wohl die meisten aus der Mystery-Krimiserie  Twin Peaks - Das ganze Geheimnis [Blu-ray ] kennen, wo er in der Rolle von Laura Palmers Vater zu sehen ist. In »Big Ass Spider!« darf er den Major der US Army Special Forces spielen, die sich um die Spinne kümmern wollen. Einerseits der knallharte Offizier, weiß er dennoch das fachliche Können des Kammerjägers zu schätzen. Zwar ist dies meiner Meinung nach keine der wichtigsten Rollen des Films, doch finde ich es erfrischend, dass der harte Militär-Offizier auch mal als einsichtig gezeigt wird – vor allem im Abspann.CLARE KRAMER kenne ich bisher nur in ihrer Rolle der dämonischen Göttin Glory in  Buffy - Im Bann der Dämonen: Season 1-7 [39 DVDs ]. In »Big Ass Spider!« spielt sie die attraktive Offizierin Lieutenant Karly Brant, wobei ich gestehen muss, dass sie dabei in meinen Augen völlig versagt. Zwar macht die Gute optisch einiges her, als US Army Offizier der Special Forces überzeugt sie hingegen – meiner Meinung nach – überhaupt nicht. Irgendwie kommt sie zu püppchenhaft daher; da fand ich sie in der fiesen Antagonistenrolle der bösen Dämonengöttin – trotz ihrer Reize – weitaus glaubwürdiger. Glücklicherweise ist »Big Ass Spider!« eine Komödie; vielleicht hatte man sie aus eben diesem Grund mit dieser Rolle versehen.PATRICK BAUCHAU ist in der Rolle des Wissenschaftlers Dr. Lucas zu sehen, der offensichtlich mit den Genversuchen zu tun hatte. Zuvor konnte man ihn bereits in Nebenrollen in Filmen wie  2012 [Blu-ray ] oder der Serie  Castle - Die komplette Serie (Limited Edition, 45 Discs)  sehen. Mich stört an seiner Rolle in »Big Ass Spider!« eigentlich nur, dass man ihn stets mit einer Maiskolbenpfeife sieht, die jedoch noch nie in ihrem Leben mit Feuer in Berührung gekommen ist; dadurch wirkt dieses Accessoire ziemlich überflüssig und unglaubwürdig. Schade. Denn allein schon durch seine Präsenz überzeugt Patrick Bauchau in seiner Rolle. Hier kommt ihm ganz klar sein distinguiertes Äußeres zugute.Alles in allem kann man »Big Ass Spider!« durchaus als gute Horror-Komödie bezeichnen, die zwar einige Schwächen hat, die aber dennoch sehr gut zu unterhalten weiß.Von mir gibt es hierfür gut verdiente 4 Sterne.●●●●●●●●●● MEINE MEINUNG ZUR BLU-RAY ●●●●●●●●●●Ich hatte mir die Blu-ray am 3. Juni 2018 für € 6,92 bei Amazon gekauft, und bei diesem Preis kann man nicht viel verkehrt machen. Bild- und Tonqualität sind gut und bieten keinen Anlass zur Beschwerde. Das Menü ist im Hintergrund Szenen aus dem Film animiert und bietet Zugriff auf die wichtigsten Anwendungen. Ein paar weitere Untertitel und Extras wären nicht schlecht gewesen – andererseits ist es nun einmal ein klassisches B-Movie, und da muss man eventuell ein paar Abstriche machen. Dafür hat die Blu-ray Hülle ein Wendecover, was den einen oder anderen erfreuen dürfte.●●●●●●●●●● MEIN FAZIT ●●●●●●●●●●Witzige Science-Fiction-Horror-Komödie, die man nicht allzu ernst nehmen sollte, auf überzeugender Blu-ray-Disc. A comical feature similar to "8-Legged Freaks". This is a funny spatter-fest that has you rooting for the two underdog heroes of the film. Many thanks!

Very good movie with great special effects. Has recently become available on the online digital stores so compare prices there unless you want to have a hard copy format.
