Training Day [Blu-ray]

Tense, uncomfortable, and surprising in great ways
I watch this film to heal from contemporary movies, along with Casablanca and Blade Runner. Too much entertainment now leans toward bland, glib, and low-aiming drama. Denzel is singular as the self-deluding corrupt cop, Hawke is relatable as the younger cop trying to advance but anchored by conscience, and the locations all over L.A. give it a documentary feel at times. Great, ambitious early work from director Antoine Fuqua.

Well worth watching!
Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke at their very best. This movie has been out since 2001 I believe so you should have watched it by now! If you haven't seen it watch it. Lots of violence and foul language just to give folks a heads up.

Denzel plays Samuel like DeNiro
Overall, a well done movie, with a truly out of character role played by Denzel Washington. While watching the film, I kept thinking that Samuel Jackson should have gotten this role. But Denzel adds a level of professionalism and class to this role of an out of control LA Police vice detective that Jackson likely could likely not have pulled off. You know, from Jackson's previous roles in Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, that Jackson plays a "bad guy" very well, and without a doubt. Washington, on the other hand, is far more stealthy regarding character judgement. The movie Flight is a good example of this. He starts out as this wonderful "hero pilot", and ends up as a model prisoner, all because of his own bad behavior,. This bad behavior sneaks up on the viewer, and is certainly not "in your face" the way Jackson has played his roles. As Training Day gets going, one does not know what to make of Washington's character, and neither does his newly hired police partner. One wonders if the experienced detective (with 15,000 convictions) is going to be a positive role model for the newbie police officer, or is he actually a corrupt demon, which he clearly becomes by the end of the film. A very good film, that I don't particularly want to see again. It can be frightening to the viewer to see the subtle ambiguities that separate right from wrong. Washington again demonstrates his superior skills in this regard on the big screen. His acting abilities right now reminds me of a young Robert DeNiro. This film reminds me of Taxi Driver. In both films, the main character travels between "good" and "evil" with stealth and subtlety, and there are not many actors who can pull this off.
