Very much a designer's book. The title is deceptive.
This is a grand look at Avedon's work from the point of view of editorial design. If you're a visual person involved in image-making or design of any kind, you will find this book a dense feast. It is big enough to show both photos on their own and then how they became part of a two-page spread. There are layout prototypes with the original notes and comments. There are comments on sources from painting. Tales of Alexi Brodovitch. On and on. Very much a designer's book.

A treasure trove for Avedon fans
Just was sent a copy of my old friend Robert Melvin Rubin''s impressively sumptuous new book "Avedon's France: Old World New Look" published by Abrams New York and the Bibliotheque national de France, with essays by Bob and Marianne Le Galliard and wonderful photos, photos, photos by the master in his various French periods (including my favorite circa "Funny Face") --this hefty book contains amongst a plethora of treasures the best shot of Jeanne Moreau I've ever seen...if you care about photography, fashion or just plain Art you must get this book.

An exceptional little Avedon tome!
An exceptional, dense tiny tome filled with an abundance of riches! This has become a favorite Avedon book, and is also wonderful as a gift.Spectacular publication in conjunction with the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris, with an exhilarating variety of stories and celebrities relating to Avedon publications in France. Also includes a section on the importance of the friendship between Avedon and Jacques Henri Lartigue.

This really brings Avedon alive...
792 pages! This is a fat, heavy book. But it is the very best way to get a feel for the real Richard Avedon. There are a number of biographies but this is a book of almost random material, great images, lots of reflections, interviews... Great stuff about the movie "Funny Face" and about Avedon's wonderful enthusiasm for Lartigue. I will go on absorbing this material for weeks. Histories and even biographies don't give you this kind of authentic, living material. Great fun. Worth every penny. But a bit awkward at 792pp.

A Masterpiece
This is a compilation of a beautiful set of (not only) Avedon's pictures and narratives of how his life was when he was in France. A must have book for anyone who is a follower of his work.
