A Light in the Flame: A Flesh and Fire Novel

One of the best books I have ever read!
A Light in the Flame is the second book of the Flesh and Fire series, and I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review. It was my first Jennifer L. Armentrout ARC, since I became part of the team, and it was something that I dreamed of for years now. I had high expectations for this book, and it didn’t disappoint. This was one of my favorite JLA books. I still have no words to describe how much I loved it and how much it drove me crazy! It’s a rollercoaster of emotions. I was addicted and spent three days doing nothing but reading. It’s a big book, a lot happens, and new information is revealed: we get some answers, and we get more questions. It’s a book that has everything: great characters - with great development - good action scenes, and important scenes where so much happens and changes, and I had to stop to process everything I had just read. The first half of the book is a little slower than the second, but both have their importance for the story. I guessed part of the end, but it still left me screaming at my kindle, with the way things happened. I have so may theories and thoughts and this book is just out and I cannot wait for the next one already.About the characters. Sera is becoming one of my favorite characters ever. I loved her so much in this book! She is so strong and snarky and has this powerful personality that makes her strong and vulnerable at the same time. I love the fact that even if she is strong she has scars that she is working on healing and that makes her character more complex and interesting. Also, her sarcasm and snarkiness are hilarious. Nyktos was even better in this book, in my opinion. We got to see more sides of him, and he is so dreamy! I really liked his character, as a man, the love interest, and as a primal god. He is complicated but he is a good guy and would do everything for the ones he cares about. Usually, I am more of an anti-hero kind of girl and prefer the bad boys, but Jen got me with Nyktos, I really swooned for him during the whole book. With how much I loved these two, it’s no surprise that I loved the romance aspect of the book. The tension and angst were off the charts, but also the sweet moments, and confections, and the way they are there for the other, even when they don’t realize they needed each other. The side characters as it’s Jen style are also amazing, and great complements to the story. The Draken are my favorite though. Nektas with his wisdom and humor – he has this way of always knowing everything and uses that to annoy Sera and it’s hilarious – and the babies Jadis and Reaver, they are the sweetest thing and I want a baby Draken. In this book we also have a better approach to the real enemies, we get to know more about what is really at stake here, and the game levels up. We also have new characters, some good, some bad, but all are important pieces on the chess board. But there are three specific characters that I really want to see painfully dead. With everything we discovered in this book and the prophecy, the connections with the From blood and Ash series are growing and I’m so curious to find out what is Jen’s master plan with all of this. The book was amazing, five stars because I cannot give more, because if I could give a hundred I would. I laughed like a maniac and cried like a baby. Jen plays with our emotions, and I loved every single page. It gave me one of the biggest book hangovers of my life and reinforced JLA as my favorite author ever.

A Light in the Flame by Jennifer L. Armentrout is the 2nd book in her Flesh and Fire series. I am such a big fan of Armentrout, as she always gives us fantastic fantasy stories, and wonderful lead characters. The Flesh and Fire series is a prequel to her wonderful Blood and Ash series, taking place thousands of years prior to that series. Refresher: Seraphena (Sera) Mierel, our heroine, was born to be an assassin, fulfilling her part in a deal made by her ancestor all those years before, as she has trained to be a powerful weapon. Nyktos saves her life, and he takes her to his home, to become his Consort. It is here where we meet all of Nyktos’s wonderful warriors that guard him, and when they get back home, we meet many more wonderful secondary characters. A Light in the Flame picks up where A Shadow in Ember left off, with Sera’s true mission was exposed.Though at first, most of Nyktos’s people resent Sera, but as she realizes Nyktos was never her target, everything begins to change; especially her feelings toward him. Nyktos truly accepts that she was trained to enact her forced plans, but now Sera is free, determined to help defeat the real enemy. Sera had been trained all her life to kill Nyktos, and now she knows that everything she knew was false. Sera and Nyktos were so great together, with their chemistry off the wall. Nyktos continues to protect Sera, and slowly all his crew, begin to care for her too. I loved how Sera would not listen to others, when she wanted to train, as well as to help Nyktos; the warriors always gave in, and her wonderful abilities won them all over. Sera was an awesome heroine, strong, fierce, powerful, determined, a warrior, with amazing abilities and courage. Soon she realizes that she loves Nyktos, even though he is unable to love, but she will also be protective of him. Nyktos was also great, as we couldn’t help fall in love with him; especially how he protects Sera, as well of all in his realm. They were so great together, both succumbing to their true feelings.I enjoyed all the wonderful characters in Shadowlands, as they were lots of fun, and totally opening up and accepting Sera. I loved Nektas, who was great with Sera, always offering advice. But most of all I adored both Jadis and Reaver (Nektas’ baby drakens). I really loved how Sera would use her powers to bring back to life two important women, whom both would then ascend. As we get closer to the end, thinking all was well, the coronation happens, and Sera is crowned Consort. There were many villains in this book, that had me hating them, and as we raced to the end, we learn how despicable many of them were. Kolis, the King of the Gods (the false Primal of Life), was evil, especially when the truths are revealed about his knowledge of the past, changing the game. Attes, who turned into a traitor, showing his true side. Veses, who blackmailed Nyktos, causing Sera to think he was having affair with her, but later she will learn the real truth. What follows is an exciting, action filled, emotional, sexy, intense, and romantic adventure that had me holding my breaths so many times. The last third of the book was mind-blowing, with heart wrenching, emotional and many surprising twists. Jennifer L. Armentrout once again gives us another intriguing story, with wonderful world building, and lots of action, suspense, violence, betrayal, passion and fantastic characters. Of course, as the norm for JLA, we are left open, with a cliffhanger at the end. Now we have to wait to see Sera and Nyktos again. If you have not read the Blood and Ash series, I suggest you read that series, then start Flesh and Fire series.

Maravilhoso!
