No matter what I used to wash them, once he started working out again they started to smell...less than fresh. I tried the Tide Sport Wash with Febreze, which didn't seem to do anything other than mask any scent with a strong, headache causing perfume. On the verge of giving up, I came across this product and figured I would give it a try. First off, READ THE DIRECTIONS. Using this detergent defunked probably 20 years of buildup from the washer left in my home by the previous owner. You do NOT want that all over your clothes. I followed the directions and let the washer cycle through twice with old towels, before washing our gym clothes. It took some soaking but it is AMAZING how well this works. No smell whatsoever, no weird perfume and no sweat! And I hadn't even realized that my dri-fit shirts were no longer wicking away sweat like they should until cleaning with this. I'm now washing my sheets and towels with this too. Everything gets so clean and fresh after. For those that say it's expensive, please pay attention to how many washes you get out of a jar. I can honestly say that you never need more than a tablespoon of this detergent for a full washer load, and it really does stretch to 30 washes even though the jar is small. Is it a little more expensive than Tide with Febreze? Yes. Trust me, it is well worth it. Small price to pay for giving your gym clothes a longer life. Review: Ok at best. - I love my technical clothes b/c they do a great job wicking away sweat as I run. I workout 6 days a week and need shirts that dont stick to me when I sweat. I will say that I have good hygiene and luckily for me, do not have BO when I sweat. I would stick with cotton shirts all day long if they just didnt stick to me as if I was wearing a wet towel when working out. The problem with the tech fabrics is that they all have a chemical smell of some sort even when brand new. If you dont take proper care of them after working out, they will smell really bad. However, nothing that I've tried can get rid of the chemical smell of the tech fabrics as they heat up when working out? Initially, I purchased sports suds b/c of the bad bacterial smell from improper cleaning/care. Sportsuds did the trick and the clothes had no bad smell. However, when working out and breaking a sweat, the clothes emit a terrible strong chemical smell that doesnt go away until the shirt is completely soaked in sweat. It's very weird but the initial rise in body temperature to the point of sweating triggers a very strong metallic smell from the tech fabrics. Im not sure if it's due to the detergent but I havent been able to figure that out. I've used sports suds to bring back a few shirts from the dead that I simply did not take good care of in the past (threw them in the hamper and let them sit for a week before doing a load of laundry) and those retained a terrible bacterial smell no matter how many washes in regular detergent. Sports suds got rid of the bacterial fungus smell but brought out a different chemical smell.

It Really Works!
I was hopeful when I read many of the reviews. Two family members have excessive perspiration. They use special deodorants but the clothes still smell bad and have discoloration at the armpit. I was using vinegar to pretreat and soak the shirts in and it still took 3-4 wash cycles every time I did a load of their laundry. I purchased Sport Suds and I followed the directions on the package and thoroughly cleaned my washing machine. I ran several cycles with hot water and vinegar and one with Sports Suds. Then it was time to put it to the test. I washed the clothes without pretreating and they had a faint odor after one wash. This was remarkable because they smelled worse than this after 3 washings most of the time. I ran them through another wash and they had absolutely no odor bad or good. I am thrilled and make my kids bring their clothes home from college for washing. It would be impossible to use this method at school because the washing machines have tons of residue and this product actually cleans your washing machine and deposits any grime...on clothes - hence the reason to clean the machine before using. It is a lifesaver and the clothes look so clean and have absoluely 0 odor. Expensive, but worth it for people with problem perspiration odor.

Incredible Product!
My husbands work shirts were full of residue from deodorant and sweat that they could stand up by themselves and felt grimy even though they were dry - but he wanted to keep them to use for work. My son's shirts had an extremely unpleasant odor due to sweat and no matter how many washes and drying in the sun the odor remained - I thought I would have to replace his wardrobe. I tried Sport Suds and I couldn't believe it. My husbands shirts came out like new - no residue at all - with one tbsp of Sports Suds. My son's clothes (which had an extremely bad odor to them) came out with only a slight odor so I soaked them overnight in one tbsp of Sports Suds (as recommended for really bad odors) and washed again and there is no smell at all. I waited a few days and thought the smell might return but no scent at all. This product is incredible. I highly recommend it.

It's actually not bad
Check my other reviews for these types of detergents. I have tried several (Win, Win Free, Scuds, and Penguin) and decided give a brief review of all at the same time. I find the SportSuds works pretty well, I like the scoop, easy to dispense. I would recommend this as a first choice, along with Win Green Dye Free, if you want something that is scent free. If you don't mind a scent, I would say try the Win in the blue bottle first. I do not notice any scent left by the detergent. I would recommend those looking to try these odor removing detergents to try out (in order of preference), Win in the Blue bottle, Win Green Dye Free and SportSuds, tying for 2nd place. UPDATE 9/24/2013: I have noticed typically it may not be the washer that can cause scents/smells on clothing but the dryer. I have seen numerous products in retail to "clean" the washer of smells and odor but nothing for the dryer. The general assumption by the manufacturers are that everything that goes into the dryer is clean and odor-free. This is because a majority of the washing detergents contain a scent/perfume. Also, with all the perfumed dryer sheets, the manufacturers probably figure all is well. For our family, it is different. We use non-dyed, non-perfumed washing detergent. We also use scent free dryer sheets. I have performed a test and determined it was our dryer adding a smell to the clean clothes. Try this - wash a load with a non-scented detergent, take a couple clothing out and hang dry in another room/area. Dry the rest of the load with a non-scented dryer sheet. I specified non-scented to avoid any cover up of odors/scents on clothing. Hang up a couple dryer dried clothing, next day compare the hanged dried vs dryer dried. Do a smell test with the dryer clothing vs hang dried clothing. It is best to compare under garment clothing like t-shirts as they are closest to our body and absorb the most body odor, etc. You will know easily if the dryer is adding additional smells or not. Our dryer is over 15 yrs old, it was in the house when we moved in, and we know the previous owner had a dog(s). So our dryer's lifetime history is partially unknown, who knows what was thrown in there. So YMMV, depending on your dryer's history. Currently, I have been testing cleaning of the dryer drum. I have used a washing cloth with water and some lemon juice. I have also tried baking soda with cloth and water. I've also used the lemon and baking soda cloths, running a short cycle. All work, probably prefer the lemon juice method for now. I may try leaving some carbon in there overnight (not running of course, it may create a mess). There is no smell anymore, so any cleansing will be for prevention. Also, for others, if it's been a long time, vacuum out the lint filter. Wash it if scented sheets are used often, scented sheets coat and gum up the screen and further reduce the dryer ability to exhaust the hot air out to vent, not to mention, maybe even a fire hazard. If you can, I suggest making sure dryer pipe venting out is within city/village code and taking it apart to clean, vacuum, and or wipe the inside. There WILL be lint/dust in that exhaust pipe that the lint screen does not collect, that buildup sitting over the years, from the different seasons and humidity, may also contribute to odors in the dryer. Finally, I have also made a point of ensuring our laundry area/room is not closed, not musky, and have open air. The dryer circulates air and heat to the clothing, I wanted to make sure the air it is receiving is clean and not musky. Please click YES if my review have been helpful to you, it will encourage me to continue writing and updating my reviews, and leave a comment if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer if I can be of help.

We live in Florida and do CrossFit and run 3-4 times a week. It was critical that I find a detergent that really cleaned our workout clothes. The first thing I did was buy a small plastic hamper with holes for our stinky gym clothes. I thought maybe having them sit in a non-ventilated hamper was making it worse. After a few washings, I noticed they still weren't quite right. That's when I decided to try this stuff. It really works! Even on older clothes that smell OK coming from the drawer but begin to smell as soon as you start exercising. Just one was in SportSuds and the lingering odor was GONE. I was nervous about using a powder in my front loader HE, but you just throw it in with the clothes. I even did the recommended empty cycle wash and it got rid of the funky smell from my washer! Yes it is expensive, but we do one load of sport clothes a week and I feel like I've barely made a dent in the tub. Seeing as how some of our clothes can be expensive I feel like this is a great investment in lengthening their lives.

Not for deep, ground in odors
I wanted to make sure I used it all before I wrote a review. This is NOT for deep, ground in odors; you know, the kind when you wash it, the smell just will not come out. I bought this in hopes of saving some shirts with pit smell, but it didn't work. No matter how many scoops, soaking, vineager, sunlight I used, the sweaty smell just came back. It did seem to clear out dirt pretty well. No strong fragrance from the product itself. Low suds, too, if you're looking for that.

I have not totally made up my mind about this product. It seems to work exceptionally well on synthetic fabrics. It does not seem to do very well with cotton. Additionally, because I am accustomed to using Tide, I am used to having all of the chemical additives that keep my cotton fabrics from fading. SportSuds is somehow more harsh on the fibers and the dyes. Last, it is leaving a residue on the plastic door of my front loading washer and on the gasket that seals the door. I have had the machine for two and a half years, and no other product has done this before. CLR will remove it with a good bit of rubbing. While it may be a result of the hardness of the water in our area, I have to repeat that no other product has ever left this kind of residue before.
