Daughter loves this book
My daughter loved this book and others from this author. I would definitely call this “junk food” reading but it kept her attention and a little light reading is always fun.

(4.5 stars) - Highly enjoyable but with a ***Parental Caveat
Kasie West adds a smidge of Dirty Dancing flavor to her latest YA - but don't worry, it doesn't actually borrow that much from the plot & is arguably the better storyFrankly, I wasn't actually that drawn to the plot description or even the first chapter, initially, but having read pretty much everything the author has written, I knew odds were good that I would enjoy it - & I definitely didAvery is at a moment in her life where she has to decide whether maintaining her status quo is as important to her as the things she will miss out on or lose by doing so.The protagonists start out pretty negative - their lives have hit some seriously rough patches, especially Brooks. I loved how they learned to deal with their problems in more positive ways.I also loved that Avery learned to advocate for herself without doing it in a selfish way. Her parents are like real parents - not perfect but loving & trying to do what's best for their kids. And her sometimes rocky relationship with her sister reached a new depth & they acquired a new understanding & respect for each other. So many real world, great family messages! There were a few minor plot strands that weren't really resolved at the end, but it didn't significantly detract from the story.*Romance level: passionate kisses, but nothing graphic***PARENTAL CAVEAT: While I enjoyed the book quite a bit, it does bear noting that Avery's dishonesty with her parents is addressed, but the issue of the camp's employee rules being broken on a regular basis is ignored. Yes, it's a common thing, & certainly there's room to question them, BUT it's also dishonest & there's a lack of integrity in accepting the rules of your employment, & then breaking them as soon as you don't want to follow them. I wouldn't keep my teen from reading it - rather, it's a great opportunity for discussion of moral principles with your teen

Okay, but not my favorite
I have to admit, this book fell a little flat for me. I thought the idea seemed like a good one, and I felt like she wrote Avery as a real, relatable character, but there wasn’t the magic of some of her other books. To be honest, it felt like a lot of the plot points were things we’ve already seen from West: the younger, over dramatic relative, the off limits boy, and the outdoor setting from Listen to Your Heart. The song writing from P.S. I Like You. The list making from Love, Life, and the List. This didn’t really feel like a fresh idea.I also felt like it was lacking the really cute or swoon-worthy moments that are the best part of YA books like these. I didn’t feel the tension between Avery, and Brooks. I knew they liked each other because the author told us so, but I wasn’t feeling the chemistry. And after their first kiss, which was admittedly a great one, it’s BOOM, we’re a couple, and then they fight. Very few of those moments when you really SEE them. While I liked how Avery ultimately handled her issues with her best friend, the Shay plot line felt underdeveloped—especially the resolution—and simply there to create drama. It could’ve been lifted out of the story with very little impact. I also felt like the issues with her dad needed more than what they got too.West is always really good with dialogue, and there were some funny moments that I really enjoyed. Her books are something I typically look forward to, and recommend. While it wasn’t my favorite, it’s still a nice story.

A YA Dirty Dancing with music instead of dancing.
Sunkissed was like a PG-rated Dirty Dancing with music instead of dancing. I had a great time listening to it. Avery could sometimes be annoying with her people pleasing, directionless ways... but I could relate to her and those qualities teenage qualities in myself. This summer romance was sweet, easygoing, and fun. I loved how there wasn't too much drama.
