An excellent little piece on Operation Polo, the military operation necessitated to integrate Hyderabad with the Indian state. This history was unfortunately not taught to us, or was covered in one fell swoop - maybe a few paragraphs in our text books.Mr Prasad provides a succinct overview of the political situation leading to Operation Polo, and a comprehensive picture of the military operations. The book was probably sponsored by the historical section of the Ministry of Defence and may therefore have some biases in it - but it's pretty good nevertheless.I wish there was a larger catalogue of such books written by Indian authors with access to defence records. It would also be great to have an updated version of this book with later day consequences of this operation and the fates of the personalities involved. Razvi and Laik, key actors in the situation, for instance ended up in Pakistan and have even had political careers over there!
