Fascinating.
I may have purchased this book with an eye to confirming my own convictions, but, instead, it made me reconsider my reactions to women both famous and not famous. Of course, I may need to pull this book out now and again to remind myself not to be a judgmental twerp, but that's fine because this book is eminently readable and interesting.

All Too Brief Survey of Awesome Women
I enjoyed this book very much, though I would have liked to have seen a brief survey of the Botox Brigade (Cher, Dolly Parton) along with the section on Madonna. I would also have liked to see something about Brianna Wu--who got death threats for simply thinking that video games should have more realistic women (one such person showed up in her home town with a rope and an axe in his trunk, the local sheriff was not amused). Video games are a more important part of popular culture than the author thinks, at least as important as who gets reviewed in the NY Review of Books. A quick look at E.L. James (Fifty Shades etc.) might have been a good look about the changing face of publishing and how Unlikely People can break through. But perhaps those will be articles for a companion volume. For what was there, though, this was excellent.

I enjoyed this immensely.
AHP's thought-provoking deep dives into culture and fame never fail to entertain and educate me--I am such a fan of her style of journalism and scholarship. Society's treatment of unruly women is a perfect subject for this writer to tackle. In the wake of the most recent election, I had no idea how much I truly needed this book to help me process and articulate so much of my own heartbroken feelings about the ingrained misogyny in our culture. I found it to be beautifully and thoroughly researched (wow), illuminating and fortifying--like a long, juicy, animated chat with your smartest and most fun friend.

A Gem of a Book
Anne Helen Petersen gave us a gem of a book in Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud. It's incredibly readable, thoughtful, and insightful. The book felt like a conversation about pop culture with a good friend. There were times when I wanted to stand with Petersen and say, "Yes, me too!", times when she challenged me to go beyond my own beliefs, and times when I wanted to push her a bit further. We need more concise, readable books like Petersen's to delve into the "unruly" among us––those who challenge our conceptions of norms and push us to rethink our assumptions.

Concise and delightful
Listen, I'd follow Anne Helen Petersen into battle. I just finished Too Fat Too Slutty Too Loud and I'm left with a lot. In a good way! AHP has ten sections of various women who are "too" something and breaks down their work and ultimately the pendulum swing reaction for daring to be unruly. The text is wonderful at framing things in a larger context and pulling from rich sources. I closed the book with a new sense of challenging myself and how I evaluate the work and existence of other women. I was able to forgive myself for things and forgive other women too. Things are weird now but I found some peace here. I think this is an essential read and part of creating a springboard for more. Anyways as always follow Celebrity Gossip, Academic Style on Facebook for more of AHP'S work and a fantastic community of voices examining pop culture.

Thorough and truthful
I felt both hot holy anger and prickly discomfort with reading these great chapters on women who chose to break the mold. The author did a great job of background info on the current ladies who were profiled for "too___", each one as interesting as the last one. Great read.

Funny, feminist, and fabulous.
Absolutely delightful. I had high hopes for anything by Anne Helen Petersen, but the surpass my expectations. Anne has a way of challenging my feminism in ways I was unprepared for. Each chapter is a beautifully and thoughtfully written essay on a different woman in the public sphere who dares to step outside the line. I found myself pondering each woman individually and wondering how each one related to my own life. My mind changed on some, expanded on others, and read this book so voraciously I wish it was three times as long just so I could spend more time with it. If you're looking for an engrossing, modern look at the Modern Woman, look no further.

and strikes the most perfect balance of sophisticated and accessible
I can't stop thinking about this book since I finished reading it--which is my highest praise for any book! Petersen's writing here, as in her online platform, is witty and irreverent, and strikes the most perfect balance of sophisticated and accessible. Her insights on Broad City and Melissa McCarthy are my favorites, but the whole book is just filled with insight into the best female popular icons -- the unruly ones! I'm a huge fan of Petersen and glad that she is applying her academic training to make sense of pop culture for us.

Brilliant
Very interesting, well written and perfectly timed with the issues currently in the news. The book is easy to dip into for a chapter or two and give you opinions to think about. My one struggle was a few of the women discussed I didnt have a great deal of prior knowledge of (for example Ilana Glazer from Broad City), but this was because most (if not all) of the women featured are American and I just haven’t read too much on them. But after I finished the book, I watched/read up on particular women featured and then re-read the chapters.Highly recommend.

Deep and thoughtful
From the front cover I expected it to be low-to-medium Brow but it is medium-to-high Brow. So much sociology. Ten chapters about ten people for ten different reasons - you can hop around the book choosing which one to read next. Very good.It is a book about rebellion and in particular about gender rebellion Everyone has issues with the stereotypes and so this book is a good resource for everyone.

Important, must-read
This book is eye-opening. It’s so good, I bought it for my best friend and my sister. Well written, thoroughly researched and in a world of quite a few feminism books (which I love) it really taught me something new. Everyone should read it.

Very worth reading
Insightful and thought-provoking, even if I didn't agree with all of the examples the author chose, she made an eloquent case.
