Carhartt Men's Storm Defender Loose Fit Heavyweight Jacket: A Study in Size and Durability
Our journey with Carhartt products has been long and fruitful, marked by consistent quality and durability across their range. Venturing into the Storm Defender series for the first time, we selected a large size, anticipating a fit suitable for a standard large wearer. However, this jacket introduced us to a surprising spaciousness, hinting at a design favoring generous layering potential. The "loose fit" descriptor is notably accurate, as the jacket comfortably accommodates extra layers underneath, a feature that initially led us to mistake our large for an almost extra-large or larger. This roominess, while advantageous for layering in colder conditions, presents a sizing dilemma for those seeking a snugger, lightweight option. Echoing other reviewers, we suggest considering a size down to strike a balance between layering capability and fit. Despite this sizing conundrum, the jacket's detachable hood is a highlight, offering versatility and convenience in varying weather conditions. Initial tests under a faucet hinted at the jacket's waterproof capabilities, performing admirably against light to moderate water exposure. Yet, its efficacy in heavy downpour remains to be seen, a trial we look forward to. As expected from Carhartt, the jacket's construction is impeccable. From the resilience of the zipper and buttons to the strategic placement and abundance of pockets, every aspect of the jacket exudes quality and thoughtful design. Accessing essentials is effortless, thanks to well-positioned pockets that blend security with convenience. In summary, the Carhartt Men's Storm Defender Loose Fit Heavyweight Jacket stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to quality, though its generous sizing warrants careful consideration. Ideal for those who prioritize flexibility for layering without compromising on protection against the elements, this jacket is a robust addition to any outdoor wardrobe. With Carhartt's reputation backing it, we remain confident in its performance, albeit with a keen eye on how it holds up against the more severe whims of weather.

Very warm and comfortable
Great jacket from carhartt, very warm, soft jacket with lots of room. ( runs large ) And being waterproof is a plus as is the removable hood. Definitely a good looking jacket that's built for durability. Zipper function seems fine. I think it's a great value for the money! Another great carhartt product !!

The absolute best!
Heavy built, but light weight. Waterproofing is well designed. Pockets have built-in flap covers as not to incur rain through the zippers. Very well made, such as is what Carhartt is all about. Ive worn Carhartt duck jackets for 30+ years, and this is hands down the best jacket I've ever had!

A truly AWESOME product, with 2 shocking design mistakes, that I'm choosing to live with
Alas, I almost returned this rain jacket. In general, I am a hardcore Carhartt brand believer because A_their products put an unmistakable emphasis on DURABILITY, and B_the FIT is consistently remarkable. Nothing beats their work pants; double duck Dunn, in chocolate brown, Midnight, or Navy blue. WHAT THE DESIGNER GOT RIGHT with this jacket 1,2,3: 1-The Heavy hand fabric looks as tough as nails, and yet is not overly stiff, and it has some breath-ability, to prevent condensation. The stitching quality is magnificent. 2-FIT A+.I’m 6’ 2”, 44 waist, and got the -Extra Large/LONG- size: Bingo. A medium pile layer will fit underneath, yet I’m not swimming in it, without that layer added. I can bend over easily, and it fit on the first ordering try. THAT is the work of an expert pattern cutter. Bravo Carhart, that shows your earned experience. 3-The MIDNIGHT color is perfect. But alas, THE TWO SURPRISING FAILS: 1-The sleeve ends have Velcro tabs (great) combined with thick insulated elastic fabric sealing off ones wrists full time.(Totally lame.) These are like on an insulated High School athletic jacket. WHY? This is a raincoat. Why both types of wrist seals on the same rain jacket? A tragedy, a clueless design choice; it is both redundant and it creates insufferable cooling issues. Whenever I see even simple elastic at the wrists, it’s a deal breaker, wildly uncomfortable. To cool off, you unzip the front, chilling ones torso, while ones arms continue to overheat. The simple but adequate provided Velcro tabs seal out the cold already, so I’m sorry to be rude, but that is embarrassingly bad design for an outdoor garment.(?) But, I’m keeping the jacket, and immediately paying a tailor to REMOVE those insulating wrist bands 2-FAIL-The zipper is the TOOTH type, not a medium or heavy YKK coil zipper, which is the standard on any garment at this medium price point, made to be tough, since the 1970’s, that’s 50 years now. Light coil zippers do fail, but medium to heavy YKK is gold. ANY tooth zipper, if you bust one tooth, it’s ruined, whereas a coil can often repair itself. But the part cost per unit is twice as much. MY FIX: I’m keeping the coat, as this can be repaired later, if needed...and I expect to repair that tooth zipper in 2-4 years, while the coat will last me 10+ years. WIN 4-The huge pockets are GENIUS; big enough for mitts inside at a football game, with room to spare, to include a small camera or binoculars. Just awesome. These pockets also have tooth zippers...except here they are so well supported, they run smoothly, and to my surprise, they inspire confidence, and look like they will last. WIN 5-While I tend to prefer a fixed hood design, the drawstring incorporated into the removable type hood--is as good as the best mountaineering jackets I’ve ever seen. IN SUMMATION, I deeply love my new jacket, but I’m calling my local tailor—right now--to fix these pathetic insulated wrist hoops...on a rain jacket! (?)

I’m an HVAC installation technician and I’ve been looking for a heavy duty hard shell for a while. Wasn’t going to review so soon as today was my first day wearing it to work. However I received numerous compliments from guys at work saying how great it looked and asking the name of it. It felt fairly stiff out the box, however I know it will break in and it has enough space to layer with my Carhartt Heavy Weight Rain Defender hoodie that’s a size Large although I bought this jacket in Medium. It almost seems too good to use as a work jacket but it’s tough shell quickly reminds me that it’s designed to handle it. I haven’t tested it properly as yet in rain but worked outside in fairly strong winds today and felt properly protected. This is not a winter jacket or a jacket intended to keep you warm on its own in colder temperatures. If you’re buying it for that then you’re wasting your money. This is a heavyweight rain/wind jacket for someone who will wear layers and needs a tough outer shell that will be great against wind and rain while also being abrasive resistant. I read reviews about the hood being too large, however as I’ll be wearing a hat/beanie the majority of the time with it, that won’t be an issue. I also don’t find the hood to be much larger than my other rain jackets (North Face & Helly Hansen) hood. When working in high winds, I actually prefer a larger hood as it provides more face protection.

Carrhart are generally a little on the big side, I’m a uk XL and I ordered this size, it was the right choice with enough room for layers. It’s a heavyweight coat with storm cuffs and a generous hood which should help to keep the weather out. Outside pockets to either side are slanted and have a good drop into the bottom which should help to prevent loss of anything placed in them, zippers are also provided. Not used in inclement weather yet but I have every confidence in this coat. Breast pocket is again a good size and zippered, the internal pocket is a little on the small side. It’s the second Carrhart item I’ve bought from kustom kult, based in Germany, delivery is good as is the price
