American Experience: The Great War

Mind-Blowing
I just could not wait to be ask for my customer review. I have to say this is the most involved, indepth, revealing, and insightful documentary I have ever seen about WW I. I was struck silly. I was expecting the same old hashed and rehashed whitewashed story that had been told time and time again about WWI and Pres. W. Wilson. As an African-American PBS has nearly moved me to tears in telling of how WWI impacted the Afrcan-American, the Hispanics, as well as the whites. PBS has done its job in TELLING THE REAL TRUTH behind the war and Pres. W.Wilson. I am not saying that I am want the name of any of this documentary's historical figures scandalized, defamed, smeaedr or shamed, regardless of their color, but simply tell the truth of what really went on in America. I love this dvd and I am not even finish watching it. Loved it.

for the average person it is 5 stars and highly recommended. ENJOY
Made John J Pershing sound racist when in fact he was not; look up how he got the name "black-jack!" Also implied that Eddy Rickenbacker, was chosen to be a hero by the US CPI; again wrong, there would have been no keeping him from being a hero! A few other minor historical errors, but other than that, it provides wondeful insight into many aspects of the war, was very well presented and organized. If I wern such a Pershing and Rickenbacker "nut job groupie" I would have given this 5 stars +......for the average person it is 5 stars and highly recommended. ENJOY!

The DVD you need in order to learn about WW I......
My grandfather was in this war and I wanted to know more about it. I've read about WW I but needed more as it is very complicated. Once I watched American Experience: The Great War, it really helped. It covered everything. American Experience does it very well. If only they did one like this about WW II....

The Forgotten War Explained Across Dimensions
These DVDs go into great detail about the forgotten war, the Great War, the War to End all Wars, World War I. While they certainly cover events of the time (including the war itself) from a U.S. perspective, they also provide a lot of material from European perspectives. After all, the U.S. did not jump into the trenches until the last six months of fighting. This multi-disc set is wonderful. If you want to know about WWI from multiple perspectives and across various dimensions (sociology, politics, economics, military, etc.), then get this DVD set.

This was an amazing collection of vintage film pieces detailing the what
This was an amazing collection of vintage film pieces detailing the what, why and where of this conflict. I previously knew highlight events, but this goes way beyond the headlines. And the natural sounds put behind the silent film segments were so artfully done. A few friends watched this with me and when it was over I told them that this was all silent film footage with soundtrack added.and they couldn't believe it. This got my vote for the Cinema Audio Society television non-fiction series of the year.

Now I understand why it was called "The Great War"
The "Great War" is excellent and informative. It is a great purchase and makes a excellent transition which clearly explains the reason why there was a Second World War. One though must bring a seat belt. It's horrific. I am surprised anyone survived the First World War to combat a Second World War. I've watched it twice and will probably watch it a third time.

This is a terrific series from PBS' American Experience on the role of the U.S. during World War I. As a history teacher I really appreciate how it looks at the 1917 Espionage Act and other violations of civil rights and liberties during the war which astonish my students. The footage is amazing. Very well done.
