Gatco 40006 "MCS" Military Carbide Sharpener

If you're looking for something to hone knife to a razor edge this isn't it. If you have a very expensive knife with high quality or tool steel and want to resharpen it, this isn't it. If you're looking for a tool to change the edge bevel angle on a knife, this isn't it. This is a field sharpener that resharpens practical knives to a workable edge. In that sense it's great. It's easy to use and small enough to carry everywhere. It'll have at least some effect on most low to medium quality steels except for the hardest of tool steels like D2. I keep it in a camping backpack to sharpen up the edge of a knife after using it to baton through a log or skin an animal or anything like that. If you own a high quality knife that can keep an edge after chopping down a few redwoods though, you're better off getting a quality sharpening system with precise angles and just make sure you sharpen your knife before going on trips.

Nice solid little sharpener.I had asked if it can be used left handed. Three kind folks said yes. I asked Gatco and they replied it was designed only for right handed folks. I found that to be true. As designed no way for us lefties to use it properly. I epoxied it to a small wood base cut from plywood. Still portable and works fine left handed. Really does do the job as advertised.

It only takes a few quick pulls of the blade through the sharpener to get a sharp edge. Lightweight and fits in a pocket.

It is very good sharpener! It works just fine! The friend of mine, who actually recommended me to buy especially this model, is using the same one for a while, and he's very satisfied with it. The sharpener is a little bit smaller than I expected, but it works just great.

Wore out the first one we had after about 20 years of use. I ordered two this time, this one for hunting ( fits on a key chain), The Gatco pencil type for my kitchen. Simply put, this is the best and easiest to use sharpener I've ever seen. Should say, sharpener for dummy's. Just pull straight though, with only mild pressure 2-3 times and you can split hairs! It's that simple!

It's nice for camping and/or backpack gear.

Works real easy and does a great job. My knifes get used a lot and all it takes is several pulls through and they are sharp afain. There is no issue getting the wrong angle on your edge and dulling the blade.

This little sharpener is really effective. My son had one first and I was so impressed with it I was seriously thinking of stealing it. My better nature won out and I bought my own.

To small

Great sharper, all knives used left metal pieces on it, sharpened, while it does't have a scratch. Plates can be rotated when used. Very light!!
