High-Quality Peter Gabriel Hits
This collection by Peter Gabriel is definitely a collection full of great hits. Some of my personal favorite songs included in this greatest hits cd set are:Solsbury HillShock the MonkeySledgehammerGames Without FrontiersDigging in the DirtSteamLovetown My overall favorite song is "Sledgehammer" because he cleverly phrases the lyrics in a way to express what he plans to be to his lover in a tasteful and unique manner. "Games Without Frontiers" came in as my second most favorite Peter Gabriel song because he expresses great talent in making a political message in how idealogies between different countries can sometimes cause a challenge in diplomatic relations. I also like how he wisely sings the lyrics in the song "Dressing Up in Costumes, Playing Silly Games". I also believe that the song sends a thoughtful and positive message about looking past the external appearance of someone and instead making a open-minded observation based on what is picked up from their personality and spirit. The greatest hits collection is a high-quality and strong cd set that is a good collection to have if you enjoy 80's music, Phil Collins, Genesis, pop music, and/or rock music.

Atmospheric
The instruments and rhythms are excellent. Synthesizers make a major contribution. Unfortunately, in some passages the lyrics are indecipherable, and no lyric sheet is provided. In other passages Gabriel pronounces the words clearly, but their collective meanings remain opaque, which is frustrating. I like the atmospheres created by the instruments, in the same way I appreciate Speaking In Tongues by the Talking Heads, which is an even better album. On Hit the best song is "Blood of Eden." On Miss the best song is "I Grieve." To name two competitors, Peter Gabriel is better than Phil Collins or Steve Winwood.

This choice resulted in both good and bad results
Don't misunderstand me...My review is not a slam against Peter Gabriel. My purpose here is to inform those that may be in a similar situation as I was. I have Gabriel's first LP. I haven't listened to it for a long time simply because it is inconvenient to drag out old vinyl. I've been in the process of replacing old records that I care enough about to hold on to, with CD's. Gabriel's tune "Here Comes the Flood" is the reason I've kept the album, and bought this CD.The logic behind my purchase: it contained the song I was looking for, and offered me many others to get familiar with this artist. This choice resulted in both good and bad results. I was extremely disappointed to find the version of "Here Comes the Flood" on the CD was a sparsely produced version which could serve as a rough a demo track. Certainly not the magnificent version on his first album. The rest of the CD contains songs that for me are trivial and style conscious that do not interest me in the least. The "good" thing that happened by purchasing this CD was that it moved me to go right out and buy a CD version of that first album...and I'd forgotten what a great album that is in it's entirety. So my message is clear here: If you're looking for "Here Comes the Flood" Get the original recording...( in my opinion the selections provided on it are a much better collection than on the CD this review refers to).

Stellar, But Not Comprehensive Gabriel Collection
"Hit" is a double-CD collection of Peter Gabriel's greatest hits, one disc labelled "Hit," and one labelled "Miss." The great Mr. Gabriel is the former lead singer of Genesis and one of pop/rock's greatest talents because of his clever and inventive lyrics, and notable visual style on videos and in concert. Moreover, his selfless devotion to popularizing world music has made him a champion of otherwise unknown Third World musicians."Hit" captures early Gabriel ("Solsbury Hill" "Shock The Monkey"), middle Gabriel ("Sledgehammer" "Steam") and later Gabriel ("I Grieve" "The Drop") and many other songs that capture the flavor and essence of Gabriel's soulful, eclectic style. But as good as this collection is, it's not comprehensive. Missing is "I Have The Touch" and "Mercy Street," and other fans would think of other songs that should have been included. But this much Gabriel is always a great thing, and "Hit" is worth having for that reason alone.

Good Overall Collection
Some of Gabriel's better stuff is in this collection, though most of it also saw tons of airplay on radio.

Perfection in the ethereal motion of music.
I've been an huge listener of Peter Gabriel ever since 1977, when he released his first solo album. Now that I'm old, this CD hits the spot; both discs in the set. Peter Gabriel is pure genius. If you're a fan of early Genesis and/or Peter Gabriel, this set is a must!

Love this!
After futile searches for digital versions of Peter Gabriel's music, finally gave in and bought this double-CD set. So happy I did! Love the music: both songs I remember and other songs I hadn't really been exposed to.

Two-disc overview of Gabriel...1977-2003
I've never really listened to Genesis, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway appeals about as much as Tales of Tophographic Oceans, but Peter Gabriel I've always liked. The first thing I heard was Games Without Frontiers, though it was more Robert Fripp's guitar & Kate Bush's vocal I recall. Along with Ashes to Ashes, it was one of the first records I liked as a youth (age 7, I do believe!). & Gabriel has released some pop songs since, some verge on irritating (Big Time, Steam- both here- though at least we'r spared Kiss That Frog & Barry Whatever Show)- but frequently wonderful soundtrack works (Passion, Birdy, Rabbit Proof Fence) & sublime ballads (Blood of Eden, Mercy Street). It's an interesting career, and Hit attempts to condense it over two discs, and largely succeeds- this is far superior to the previous Gabriel retrospective, Shaking the Tree (1990).The running order is curious, and it has to be noted that some of the tracks are in truncated versions or remix form- I think it's pretty terrible to shorten Blood of Eden (though curiously I think the version with Paula Cole from the 93 live album is the best take of it!)- the tracks from Up (not a huge success like So) are fine (More Than This especially) & the new single Burn You Up, Burn You Down is suitably excellent. It's nice to see another side of Gabriel acknowledged- Lovetown (from the soundtrack to Philadelphia), The Rhythm of the Heat (from Peter Gabriel 4, but also known as 'The Heat' from Birdy- an instrumental that was also used in the snakebite/pharmacy scene in the film Natural Born Killers)- very sinister stuff, that could be Colin Newman/Wire, if you think about it! & it's great to see some of the earlier material acknowledged- Here Comes the Flood (an influence on Radiohead?- listen to the intro of Everything In It's Right Place on I Might Be Wrong, what title is Thom Yorke singing?), DIY (from the second album) & the sublime San Jacinto, which along with In Your Eyes (sadly missing, as is Across the River!), remains my fave Gabriel moment. The major hits are present- Solsbury Hill (recently covered by Erasure, also featured on their greatest hits!), Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up, Games Without Frontiers, Steam, Red Rain (covered by REM), Big Time & the anthemic elegy, Biko. It's pleasing to see the art side of Gabriel present here- No Self Control, Digging in the Dirt, Washing of the Water, I Have the Touch, The Drop & Shock the Monkey all standing out (but no Mercy Street, no I Don't Remember, no Across the River, nothing from Passion: The Last Temptation of Christ...proof that it is hard/impossible to represent everything there...).Hit is still a great compilation of Peter Gabriel's solo works, despite the missing tracks- for a two-disc set this is screaming good value, though you'll probably want to own the albums anyway. Not sure about that beard though- is it Gandalf or more Dennis Hopper in 24's first series?
