THE SHONEN JUMP GUIDE TO MAKING MANGA
E**N
Don't let the title fool you. There is nothing to learn here!
If you were expecting some useful tips, some great examples, some insider knowledge, maybe even some insight into how the shonen magazine and editorial department operates and hammers out series...You're out of luck. This is the worst and most shallow book you could pick up.To sum up this book. It's all in transcript form with a kid trying to be a manga artist and an editor who "helps" him. All the advice he is given is...1. practice2. copy others3. just figure it out4. there is no right way5. proceeds to give him a right way6. lots of "you can do it" pep talks.7. examples by other beginner manga artists (all 2-page stories)These were very embarrassing as only 2 of the artist looked like they knew what they were doing the rest look liked beginners trying their best.it ends with a Q&A of a bunch of manga artists and boy, oh boy, if you thought you would get some nuggets from them, you are out of luck. All in all, this is a terrible book to try and learn anything from, no actionable step to springboard new artists, no explanations or teaching of how a manga is produced, and no lessons that will result in you producing your first story.my recommendation would be to pick up 2 book series, they aren't in English (the best books usually aren't) but I'm sure you can figure out how to translate stuff with today's technology =)https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%9E%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AC%E3%81%AE%E3%83%9E%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AC-%E5%88%9D%E5%BF%83%E8%80%85%E3%81%AE%E3%81%9F%E3%82%81%E3%81%AE%E3%83%9E%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AC%E3%81%AE%E6%8F%8F%E3%81%8D%E6%96%B9%E3%82%AC%E3%82%A4%E3%83%89-%E3%82%B3%E3%83%9E%E5%89%B2%E3%82%8A%E3%81%AE%E5%9F%BA%E7%A4%8E%E7%B7%A8-%E3%81%8B%E3%81%A8%E3%81%86%E3%81%B2%E3%82%8D%E3%81%97/dp/4903602184https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%AD%E3%83%A3%E3%83%A9%E3%82%AF%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%82%92%E5%8B%95%E3%81%8B%E3%81%99%EF%BC%81%E3%83%9E%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E8%AC%9B%E5%BA%A7-%E7%94%B0%E4%B8%AD-%E8%A3%95%E4%B9%85-ebook/dp/B00J8DSQI8/ref=sr_1_5?qid=1666297029&s=digital-text&sr=1-5&text=%E7%94%B0%E4%B8%AD%E8%A3%95%E4%B9%85Both of those authors have great books that give actionable steps in the entire process and give newcomers to manga a chance to develop their own process and start producing stories and to get you that much-needed practice to create your own worlds to get lost in.

Amazing read!!!
The book arrived in great condition! The cover is beautifully printed, and the book itself is about the size of a manga volume. I've only read the first chapter so far. The type is a good size and easy to read, and the content is constructive and encouraging. The first chapter challenges the reader to practice making comics right off the bat, and explains what goes into making comics. It's such a good read so far and covers a lot of the questions that aspiring manga/comic creators are likely to have. I would have read further, however I've taken on the first challenge!Definitely order this book if you are serious about making manga!

Gets You Into A Healthy And Progress-Oriented Mindset!
The Shonen Jump Guide to Making Manga is really good, because its primary emphasis is on doing the work rather than a quick and easy shortcut or telling you step by step how to do this or that. It's meant to help you get into a healthy mindset of what it takes to get good. There's a ton of top mangaka and editors in it giving opinions and stuff. It's a bit like a Shonen Jump Masterclass without all the fat of having to make fluff material for that Masterclass check. I've found some extremely valuable advice in this book so far. Both as an artist and a writer, I think this book is really great. But again, the emphasis is on doing the work and being healthy about it. You can't go into the book expecting it to make you good at anything! It's like a mangaka philosophy book almost. There is a balance between the extremes of "grind yourself to death" and "fear of tackling your artistic weaknesses head on". I think reading this entire book can help one know what it takes to progress as an artist and writer, the healthy and progress-oriented mindset it takes.
