The tool is a hoe like device with a pivoting joint which can be pushed in the culvert on top of the debris and is then activated by pulling the tool back out. The pulling action causes the tool to dive down into the debris and then you simply pull it out. It is made totally out of steel so it is very durable. The handle of the unit is 1/2" threaded steel pipe ( which is not included with the tool because it is not economical for us to send you pipe through the mail) you can pick up a length of 1/2 pipe at your local plumbing supply or home center. For a extra long culvert like mine I needed (3) 10 foot lengths of pipe connected together with pipe couplings, but for most residential jobs one length of pipe is more than enough. You only need a long enough handle to get a little more than half way through the culvert, then you clean half the culvert from each end, so for a 12 foot long culvert an 8 foot long piece of pipe would be more than enough. For a longer culvert simply add more pieces of pipe. We stock sizes for standard 12" and 14" culverts, the tools are made smaller than the I.D. of the culvert to allow for clearance.(the 14" tool is for 14" diameter culverts and the 12" tool is for 12" diameter culvert pipes). You can use a smaller size tool to clean out larger culverts, it just takes a few more passes. Review: Wonderful tool - worth the price. - This cleaning tool worked really well on our culvert. I had to get a 10' rod as the store had no 8' and 6' was too short. The length of the pole made it awkward but the tool worked great. My grandson was the one doing most of the scraping and I did the shoveling. The afternoon after we cleaned the culvert, we had a real gully washer and the water flowed through it easily. We are at the bottom of a hill and get all the neighbors' runoffs including leaves and dirt. We will need to use this on a recurring basis. But a co-worker was so impressed by how well I said that it worked that he asked to borrow it. He knows that if this 67 year old said it worked, that it must have been worth the money. We were very careful to never rotate the rod counter clockwise as another reviewer had posted. We didn't want to have the cleaner come off in the middle of the culvert. A very important tip that was passed on. Review: Super Simple and Extremely Effective - I used this tool the same day it arrived. I was able to clean out a 12 foot 14" culvert pipe is about 90 minutes. We pulled 4 wheelbarrow fulls of dirt out of a pipe that hadn't been cleaned in 23 years! Push it in and pull it out and the dirt is removed....that's all there is to it. I couldn't be more pleased. It's solid and very well built. A 10 foot threaded pipe we bought at Home Depot screwed into the tool perfectly. My neighbors are now using this tool to clean their culvert pipes and have thanked me profusely for buying it. If you need a culvert pipe cleaned, no need to hire anyone at great expense. Buy this and do it yourself. I'm 72 years old and if I can do it, so can many many others.

Culvert tool does the job!
The "14" Culvert Cleaning Hand Tool did the job very effectively! I have a 16" X 20' culvert that needed cleaning. It was over half full of dirt. Purchased a 14" tool and upon receipt, went to Home Depot and purchased a 1/2" pipe @ 6 foot long. The culvert was 20 foot long. Two 6 foot and a 5 foot did the job effective. Most of the cleaning was from one end as the other end was difficult to enter into. I connected the pipes together and the cleaning tool and got the job done. I literally called around and went to Lowe's and Home Depot to see if they had something like this tool to buy or rent, none available on the market. Went on Amazon and this was the only device available. Highly satisfied customer! I thought the cost was a little steep for a simple designed tool.

this tool works good. If dirt
I had a 16" culvert and used this tool to clean out most of the dirt. However, do not turn counterclockwise since it will loosen the tool, drop off, and you will not be able to get it out again. I had to buy a second one to get the first one out. I did Loctite red the second one so it wouldn't loosen again. A pressure washer is required since I had a corrugated tube and this tool skips over. If mud, this tool works good. If dirt, this tool does not work well. The tool is not worth the hassle I had.

Got stuck but seems decent
This culvert clearing tool became what it set out to destroy. Unfortunately, my culvert is made from multiple concrete sections and there is a small gap in between each. The gaps are just the right size such that, when pulling the tool back, the tool found it's way into that gap and then got wedged between that gap and the copious amount of sticks and leaves that were stuck in the culvert. It seems like the tool would work great as part of regular maintenance when the culvert isn't so clogged. I ended up using threaded pipe with a floor flange on the end to handle most of the clog and to dislodge the tool. The tool did a good job pulling the last bit of leaves out. Recommend for regular maintenance. Be careful if you are dealing with a fully clogged pipe.

Well worth the price
I have a mile long gravel driveway with about a dozen culverts. Clogged culverts are always an issue. I wish I had known about this tool 30 years ago. Bought one 7 years ago, and it's made all the difference. LOVE this tool. The old one is about wore out now, so just ordered another. Just paved the driveway, too, so this one should last me the rest of my life. Highly recommended.

It's a lot of work but prior preparation make it more effective and easier to use
I have a pair of 20' long 16" culverts under my driveway that were about 95%/50% clogged respectively. My internet searching led me to this product. Once I placed the order, I purchased 2 pieces of 1/2" pipe; a 10 footer and a 5 footer along with a 1/2" pipe union so I had a 5', 10' and 15' handle which ultimately worked out well for what I needed. I also used 10' pieces of 1/2" and 3/4" rebar to break up the compacted dirt/gravel in my culverts using a 3lb sledge hammer as necessary prior to the tool arriving. It still took a few hours and a lot of wheelbarrow loads but the tool worked well and I highly recommend it especially after breaking it up with the rebar.
