Review: As a parent helping my child with autism navigate a complex world, I found Sally K. Norton's "Toxic Superfoods" to be an indispensable guide. This book sheds light on a largely overlooked aspect of nutrition that is especially pertinent for parents of children on the autism spectrum. Norton's meticulous research and clear presentation make it an essential read for any parent striving to optimize their child's diet and overall health. Norton dives deep into the hidden dangers of oxalates, naturally occurring compounds in many "superfoods" that can wreak havoc on health. Her book outlines the biochemical impact of oxalates and offers practical strategies to mitigate their effects. These insights are particularly eye-opening for parents who thought they were providing nutritious foods, only to learn about their potential negative impacts on children's health and behavior. Hosting the Autism Parenting Secrets podcast, I interact with countless parents seeking to unlock their child's potential through diet and lifestyle changes. Here are five key takeaways from Sally K. Norton's "Toxic Superfoods" that I believe will benefit any parent: 1. **The Hidden Risks of "Healthy" Foods**: Norton reveals that many foods commonly believed to be healthy, like spinach, almonds, and sweet potatoes, are high in oxalates. Understanding this can help parents make more informed choices about their child's diet. 2. **Impact on Autism and Behavioral Health**: The book provides compelling evidence that high-oxalate foods may exacerbate inflammation and negatively impact gut and brain health. This is crucial information for parents looking to minimize behavioral issues and support cognitive function in their children. 3. **Oxalate Testing**: Norton discusses various methods for testing oxalate levels, which can guide parents in deciding whether to adjust their child's diet. Although not always entirely reliable, these tests offer a starting point for understanding potential health impacts. 4. **Practical Dietary Changes**: The book is rich with actionable advice, including lists of high and low oxalate foods and easy swaps, like replacing spinach with bok choy. These practical tips make it easier for parents to implement safer dietary alternatives without overwhelming changes. 5. **Expert Insights and Research**: Norton supports her arguments with extensive research and personal experience, enhancing the book's credibility. She highlights the lack of awareness and research on oxalates, urging parents and healthcare providers to consider these factors more seriously. "Toxic Superfoods" is not just an informative read; it's a lifeline for parents grappling with their child's health challenges. Sally K. Norton's well-rounded approach, combining scientific data and personal narratives, makes this book a must-have resource for anyone committed to improving the health and well-being of their child with autism. As a parent and podcast host dedicated to sharing valuable insights, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book as a transformative tool in any parent's arsenal. Also, the Data Companion to this book (only available on her website) is invaluable.

I really like this book.

I heard about oxalates some years ago and brushed it off (I was vegan/veggie then). However after reading this book I removed all high oxalate foods and within a week my energy went through the roof, I needed less sleep and my brain felt switched on. I already considered myself quite high energy, so this was a wonderful surprise to have even more. I've recommended this book and Sally to many people now and all are having amazing results!

Well researched and the data regarding high oxalate foods can be used immediately. Makes sense and can be adapted to personal needs and preferences. There's a lot of information and guidance in this book but the key points are rapidly established to give confidence that it is going in the right direction. Definitely worth a read. Long held beliefs about certain healthy foods are forthrightly challenged but with scientific reasearch data to back it up. Read this book with a willingness to change your mind on some food types and prepare to be surprised at how beneficial it could be.
