Fun for Word Lovers
Smart Words is fun for those who want to expand their vocabularies and for those who just like reading about interesting words. Mim Harrison organizes her book into chapters, each focused on an idiosyncratic theme--words related to geography, words with interesting etymologies, one-syllable words, etc. The author provides a phonetic pronunciation, her own charming definition and an entertaining sentence for each word. Although the book is too conversational to take the place of an official dictionary, it can be very helpful for students of the English language, who will be happy to read it straight through from cover to cover.

Waaayyyy better than a Dictionary
Nothing has worked as well as this book in terms of helping me remember fancy words. You really do end up being able to incorporate the words into your every day vocabulary.

I learned most of these words in high school.
This book is so-so. Honestly, I learned most of these "smart" vocabulary words in high school. I was hoping for a more sophisticated collection of words.

Copacetic
I was so prepared to like this book, but as I flipped through it preparing to read it, I saw the word "copacetic" and now I want to return this book. There are not many words in the English language I despise more than that one, it is used in the workplace by people who have never read a book and use language inappropriately, so I do not know what it is doing in this one. Disappointed.

Inacurate and Cutsie isn't at all smart.
This book is awful on every level... Buy something else. Especially since she doesn't even know the vocabulary. She defines coloratura as "A trill", need I say more?
