Magnum Magnum Paperback – October 5, 2009

As a long time student of photography, I thought I had a healthy fan-boy appreciation for Magnum’s photographers. In this encyclopedia of 50+ years of some of the best photography from the 20th century, with photographs selected by and essays written by other Magnum photographers, I realized I only knew a fraction of the names and images. This has led me to dive deeper into the work of some of the lesser known artists in this book.

I found a face of Japanese famous author now when he was a boss in dark society 25 years ago. After taken the photograph,he was arrested, served in prison for many years, came out of jail, and wrote a book about colleagues in prison, it became a best selling book in that year. you can find him taken by Bruce Gilden in this book.

One of the best book ever. I only wish I bought the hard cover instead of the paperback. The photos in here are inspiring and powerful. Makes me want to go out and shoot each time I look through it. A must have if you're into PJ photographs.

Quite a good book.

I know Magnum photographs are amazing, but photos in this book were so disappointing.Absolutely failed to choose the collection.

The title of this book may be missing one word, and that is 'Opus' as it truly is a Magnum Opus. At over 600 pages, there is an essay on the work of many, if most, of those photographers who worked for Magnum since its creation about 70 years ago.All of the imagery is of high quality although not all need have been previously published. Some, I have seen elsewhere and quite recently although the majority is either new to me or only slightly familiar.Although not in any way a history of photography, and probably never intended to be one, it is something of a history of Magnum although this represents a very small percentage of the images under their control. This book may be very closely compared with  The Great LIFE Photographers  as several of the same photographers, and some of the images, appear in both and Life magazine used Magnum's photographers by choice.The style of photography is very much of the 'News' or 'Photo-Journalism' styles and some of it moves slightly to one side towards pictorialism or some other category. That makes for a good variety. Each 'article' includes a biography of the photographer or some other relevant data, all of which makes for not just a collection of historical images but something significantly greater.An important addition to any photographer's collection. This contains some historically important photographs from the Magnum agency and it's a massive book.Tons of content in this.It's impossible to please everyone when you're curating a book like this and not all the photos hit "my spot", so to speak, but it's a great book and particularly if you're into the history of photography as much as the actual photography itself.Recommended for the bookshelf of photographic history buffs.

Fantastic collection of photos, really inspirational, definitely worth buying if you have any interest in Photography.

Really great gift / coffee table book. Beautiful photos.The only slight downside is the paperback cover slightly ruins the overall quality.

It is heavy going in every sense. The book is a massive behemoth and the photos quite graphic, but as an all-encompassing slice of photography from one of the world's best known photo agencies, it is outstanding. And, unlike other photography tomes, this deals with hard news and feature photography equally.
