Battlefield Earth: Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi and New York Times Bestseller

Yes, the man was a manipulative a...
But there is simply no denying Battlefield Earth is just a master-class in sci-fi storytelling. I hate it so much, cause seriously, screw scientology...but man, this really is such a good book. There's just something so... mysterious, yet omnipresent about it. It's not flashy, but you still feel like you're in the year 3000. You can perfectly envision this...decaying, industrialized Earth backdrop, being harvested by a mysterious, powerful alien race. The way he takes language into consideration. Some may say it's a bit wordy, but I think it's great. I love the immersion. The world building, in unspoken ways. Terl, such a simple, yet complex character. He's impossible not to hate, yet Hubbard still manages to make you pity him, even root for him, at times. That's how you write a character. When you can pull all the strings of the reader with one character, not easy to do.Now, it's not perfect. Hubbard slowly but surely starts going off the deep end about 80% through, REALLY grasping here. He somehow manages to make it work...but, yeah, without spoilers, there is a point where you will be scratching your head asking where tf is he going with this. I honestly don't even think he knew, so he just kept writing until it came to him.Stick with it though because the ending does end up being quite clever, and quite satisfying.Plus, you can now say you read a 1000 page book, quite a feat. This is a good one for that.

It's a great yarn!
I know, later in life the author became a little distracted by other concerns in his life. However, in the early years he really was a good SciFi writer.Unfortunately, that prevents anyone serious from making the movie again so we'll just have to stick to the book.I have been reading this book since I discovered it in my teenage years.Whenever I read it again, I find that I can't put it down, just like the first time I read it.The potential science is a little dated but some of it is fantastic. The story is the true star and it's definitely worth reading if you are a fan of SciFi.Look past the author's other activities, ignore the awful Travolta movie, and give it a chance. My dad was never much of a SciFi reader and it took me some convincing to get him to read it.When he finally did, he enjoyed it and said to me "it was just a great yarn!".

Not like the movie but better.
If you seen the movie that starred John Travolta, (I seen it twice), it is NOTHING like the book. Big difference. Why bother making a movie from a book if it is not even close. Starship troopers was the same thing but the movie was better than the book.I got the impression that the first few chapters of the book was almost like the movie. Except that the story continues in the book. I am not going to give all the details here as I don't like to spoil a story. It is a fun read and I recommend it. Just remember that it is sci-fiction story. Make believe. I've read some of the negative comments about the book. It is just a story. Don't take it seriously. For example, how can some of the weapons like the AK-47 and some of the Americans weapons were able to survive 1,000 years with no rust, corrosion ect... The author did explain that some of them where in air sealed storage bunkers and the other weapons that the humans found outside did not work. Kind of made a comparison of the two. Another negative comment is about Johnny Tyler. How the heck did he became a engineer overnight. The book explain it how he did. Terl, the bad guy, used a learning machine on Johnny. Forced him to listen to it for reason that it is explain in the book. Terl started him with learning the Psyclo language. Then electronics and engineering follow by operating machines and aircraft. Took him about a year to learn all that. After that, Johnny kept on learning more and more. Overall, though, it is a good story. One thing I will bring up. NASA send out a probe in the '70's to seek out alien life. The Voyager. Well, in the story, that probe was the downfall of Earth. The Psychlo intersected and it had all the details of Earth. Lo and behold, they sent out a deadly probe that wipe out 99% of the human population. Then they invaded and made themselves home. In the story the Psychlo are not the only alien beings that are ruthless. There others that are worse and they want a piece of Earth, too! Thank you NASA! It makes you wonder what Voyager will find out there. Lets just hope that they are friends not foe. Scary thought!!!

Irrer Science Fiction Roman

A classic story
The story is based on the premise that Earth was conquered one thousand years earlier, and that the last remains of humanity live in isolated innaccessible locations. The conquering aliens now mine the planet, but their security chief gets greedy and decides to capture and train animals (humans) to mine gold for him from locations that the aliens themselves are unable to reach. You will see from the reviews here that Battlefield Earth has been received with mixed feelings. I feel that the book is a complete gem. Deliberately written in a very early science fiction style (reminiscent of 1930's sci-fi) this is definitely a good versus evil story, with no shades of grey. This might make the book and characters seem rather two dimensional, but for me it enhances the story and adds a definite charm.Buy this book and return to the age of innocence. The good guys wear white, the bad guys are truly evil, and if you are able to suspend any cynicism then this story will carry you along with a smile upon your face.
