Works like a true heavy duty serger
Really works like a heavy duty machine and has been dependable for the 6 weeks I have had it. I sew 6 days a week as I make and sell items using canvas and t-shirt material and it switches between the fabrics without any tension adjustment and handles both types of fabric easily and smoothly. The lift lever is super convenient for raising pressure foot. It came with a catch tray that the previos one I ordered and returned in two weeks did not include. A catch tray is just common sense and do not know why other brands do not include it. Being able to remove part of the deck is great for sewing small items that I would have to constantly stop and adjust the small small toddler skirts I make. I sew and sell items at markets and this machine has been reliable. If my other serger which is 12 years old should finally quit I would replace it with this same Brother machine. This is the first Brother brand I have bought and very happy with it.

I loved it right out of the box and it just got better!
I had a White 734/DW that cost $1000.00 in 1993. It never worked right. I was constantly trying to configure a tension with no results. In and out of the shop. After spending so much money I couldn’t get rid of so it sat for 26 years. Needless to say I was terrified of sergers. With this pandemic I started asking for donations of fabric. I was making masks for individuals and businesses. I didn’t want any money just a donation to the Food Bank. These first masks made 3800 meals. My first 340 masks took forever without a serger. So much pinning, ironing and measuring. Not to mention how bulky they were having to fold the raw edge in. My daughter is a sewing teacher, seamstress and clothing designer. I asked her to recommend a serger and she recommended a Brother. I got the Serger on the 15th of June and I have made 360 more masks to donate to a mask distribution center. Because of the new Brother Serger these mask take only a quarter of the time the old ones took. I don’t feel like a 1 person sweat shop anymore. Also the masks look great. This serger purrs like a kitten. It runs smoothly and provides an easy straight stitch. I love the side table. I am able to hold the fabric with my left hand and the garment is guided through easily. Honestly I don’t know why all sergers don’t have this feature. I like this serger so well I want to sew everyday. So much fabric was donated for this cause I could make masks everyday for years. Do take the time to get the Brother app. It was so easy to thread watching it being done. I also needed help from Brother because my accessory pack was missing. I didn’t want to exchange the machine because it did come with a sewing foot. To my surprise 3 days after contacting Brother UPS arrived with the missing accessories. My daughter who has a different brother said she is getting this model. Thank you Brother and thank you Amazon. With the fast shipment and replacement accessories I can keep making masks every day all for donating. Theses masks help feed the needy and go out to people that need them. They may also save a life. It took a whole lot of people that made it possible for me to keep sewing. I know this is very long but to get a machine of any type that you love right out of the box is rare.

Good quality and price
Item seemed to be good quality, did not use this item. I decided that it was going to be returned based on difficulty when I read about threading it. Good item for younger eyes than mine

Very user-friendly
This is my first own serger. Before I had some experience with my mother's old serger, but I couldn't make friends with it. I thought this type of machine was too complicated, so for years I postponed getting it. But when this one came, it took me almost no time and only one video class to learn all basic seams and actually start making things. Also, I was concerned that it may be loud. I live in an apartment building, and I can hear my neighbor snoring. So noise was important. The reviews were contradictory on this matter, and now I know the reason: it needs oiling right away + at least every month. When it gets dry, it may get noisy. When it's well lubricated, it is no different than a sewing machine. Just order some oil right away, it's really easy to apply it. I like that it uses regular sewing needles. When it comes to thread, it's kind of picky (which I heard all sergers are). I tried using some cheap no-brand thread from China, and it just breaks, while my sewing machine is fine with this thread. I love the extension table and use it all the time.

Ah-mazing!
I initially wanted to buy the "cute" Brother 1034D Serger, which is also Heavy-Duty, built on a Metal Frame. BUT I saw a video of "yesguyssew" and the guy used this one: "Brother ST4031HD." I was sold. So I've had it for a few days and have tested it. 1) it comes pre-threaded in different colors to understand the different positions of the lower needles, etc.2) it's easy to use--and to change thread, just cut the thread there, tie up to new one and pull it through AND 3) the real test, it can sew a two ply of thick towels. I like to reuse the old towels to make them into absorbent rugs for our boat. I was able to change the stitch width, the differential (things I did not understand before) and presto! It is worth the money--no fancy stitching like a Janome, Bernette, etc. It does its job well (comes with 4 needles--two types, depending on the material you'll use, also some other accessories. Happy Serger user here!

Good for anyone
Love this serger, we’ve made lots of projects with it, quick, easy to use, somewhat easy to thread if you watch a couple videos

Not for beginners as it is faster than other lower brother models. Very sturdy with catch tray for offcuts. I found my last brother surge was easier to thread. But it could be down to getting use to a new machine. Stitch work much better. I love it.

I don’t known what sheerness means but this serger is really good value and works great. Easy to thread, easy to set different settings like the rolled hem and blind hem. I love this machine and would buy it again in a heartbeat if I had to redo it. Works well on overlooking denim and since it has the differential feed it works well with overlooking old wool sweaters (I recycle pilled ones into dog clothes). I really have no complaints so far and it seems well made. Oh yeah and it is made in Taiwan and I personally like that. I only mention it because I had a hard time finding where it was made online.

Took a few attempts to thread, but once I figured it out it is amazingly easy.
