I got these for my 12 year old daughter because these oil paints are cheap, but suitable enough for an absolute beginner, especially an undiscriminating child, to get their feet wet with oil paints. If you are a more serious beginner that is taking a formal painting class, I would definitely bump up to a higher grade oil paint and ask your instructor for recommendations within your price range. They will be more expensive than this. Cheap oil paint does NOT behave like professional or even student quality oil paint and many of the techniques being taught in formal art classes might be really difficult with this paint. This stuff is for kids and hobbyists who have never painted with oils and want to see if they like it or not without buying a set of expensive paints. For that purpose, this set is great.
