Great starter kit! I’m having fun and learning a lot. Excellent value & variety of interesting parts
I’m very satisfied with this kit for the price and definitely recommend. I’m using an old Mac Mini to program over USB with MicroPython in the Thonny app.Pros:- It’s well-packaged and well thought-out- the 21 tutorial projects are illustrated, straightforward and interesting enough to do all of them over several days.- good assortment of parts; this was the best combination I could find at this price point. (Others didn’t include any LCD display, or lacked the 4 digit display, this has all of that.)- The black and yellow Pico shield PCB unique to this kit is really nice and useful compared to inserting the Pico directly on the breadboard and then having to look up which pin is which.Cons:- I absolutely wanted a Pico W instead, but they’re currently so sought-after that everyone is charging 2-4x the $6 retail price, and very few USA-stocked kits include them at this time. (Dec 2022)- the mini breadboard is adequate for the simple tutorial projects, but is pretty much full if you make something more complicated, such as taking my 8 LED “Knight Rider” animation and adding an LCD display reading the temperature and voltage. I already ordered a larger breadboard, but this one will definitely remain useful for compact projects.- some of the breadboard connections are loose, this seems to be a common issue mentioned on many kit reviews across many brands. Given the tiny size of resistor legs, I’m not sure a perfect solution exists. I really like these jumper wires otherwise. I gave them a slight bend on the tips to give a firmer connection using a small crimping pliers.- several major errors in several tutorial projects were frustrating. The Project 08 4-digit LED counter project code was half baked at best and not even remotely close to a functional counter. This took me 2 days to fix on my own but ultimately was really satisfying when my engineering succeeded! This appears to stem from Keyestudio reusing the same tutorial from advanced kits in this kit, but doing a sloppy job editing to match after copy and paste. To Keyestudio’s credit, they very recently uploaded the tutorials to GitHub, and I posted detailed Issues there with my corrected code, so hopefully they’ll implement the fixes, as the tutorials are currently linked on a Dropbox shared drive (which works well, tbh.)- The 8x8 LED Matrix tutorial said it will display a heart shape and a Hello World, but the code simply displays 8 horizontal lines one at a time. Searching other brands’ tutorials for the 8x8 LED Matrix, I discovered that shapes and patterns can be created using rapid blinking of one single complex line at a time to trick the eye into seeing full shapes. It’s a shame the tutorial doesn’t do this, but the nice thing is you can use other brands’ tutorials and often they use the same parts (just watch out for tutorials whose 8x8 LED Matrix use a built-in IC chip, this one doesn’t have that and must be wired up manually, although later tutorials utilize the common & included 74HC595 IC to reduce the number of GPIO pins required.)All in all, I think this was the right choice for me wanting a cheap simple Pico starter kit I could get shipped immediately. I already know so much more about electronics and microcontrollers than I ever thought I would. I’ve already ordered a kit two or three times this size from China with a Pico W (wireless); it just takes so long to deliver I actually ordered this kit to hold me over meanwhile, and it’s terrific for that. Great value, I definitely recommend.
