I thought the ball was multi-directional. to keep the tip from getting stuck in pavement cracks It rolls side to side which some may find usefull. I was taught to tap rather than slide so people would get a heads up that I was approaching. The ball tip makes the cane heavy and bulkier. The cane is well made.
