This movie was on our watchlist for a while and we finally got around to it. It was a fun movie with really good performances by a great cast, and a creative plot.

“When everybody turns right, you turn left. That’s the Kansas City Shuffle.” It’s hard to write a review of Lucky Number Slevin (2006) because the entire storyline has spoilers. I will not give them to you. (I hate when people write a review with spoilers. And people who tell the whole story, not giving an evaluation, don’t you?)Let me just tease you with this: from the chaotic wallpapers and mismatched clothes to the b&w alternating blocs to the non-linear plot to the cryptic dialogue, this film will confuse and delight you. It’s one of those films you will want to watch all over again as soon as it ends.The ensemble cast is quite a surprising one. It’s been reported that the A-listers signed on after reading the unusual script and seeing who else had signed on. During an end scene, it’s been reported, the entire cast and crew assembled on set just to watch Sir Ben Kingsley and Morgan Freeman work magic together. A masterclass in acting. Besides Freeman and Kingsley are Bruce Willis, Josh Hartnett, Stanley Tucci, and Lucy Liu. Every one of them is at the top of their game handling both the droll comedy and dead-serious drama. Paul McGuigan’s direction (Sherlock, Scandal, Smash) is impeccable and the editing is brilliant. The screenplay by Jason Smilovic (who wrote for tv) is terrific. He and McGuigan and Hartnett and Liu were just kids making this film, all in their 20s and early 30s.I have given dvds of this film as birthday and Christmas presents. It comes in widescreen and BluRay formats, too. It is also still streaming on Amazon Prime Video. However you watch it, it’s a genuine treat. 5 enthusiastic *!

Very entertaining movie that looks great on blu ray

I remembered seeing trailers and commercials for this movie when it originally came on TV and really wanted to see it, but didn't and then totally forgot about it. When I got HBO this year and it came on, I decided casually to record it, not expecting much because I didn't remember much about what the movie was about. I was really pleasantly surprised, and liked it so much that I rented it a few weeks later to watch with my girlfriend in this widescreen edition, and she loved it as well.I only give 5 stars to products that I love, and this is a movie that I love. I saw it twice in one month and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. At its heart, it's a mystery, which seems like a dwindling genre but this movie does it really well. The movie begins with Bruce Willis telling a flashback and then really begins with Josh Hartnett (Slevin) having bad luck (fired at work, girlfriend sleeping with another guy, getting robbed) and then being visited upon by mobsters working for Morgan Freeman claiming that he owes money because he's staying at a friend's place who's really the debtor. The story just unfolds from there as they try to figure out where his friend could be and how to pay back his debts to Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley.Let's start with the cast: awesome. I couldn't think of anything bad to say about anyone. I LOVED Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley as opposing crime lords. You know that an actor is great when you've seen several of his movies before but when you're watching the movie at hand you forget about all those roles and can only think about how great they are in this one. I'm usually not a Lucy Liu fan, except for Kill Bill, but movies like this somehow really highlight her talents. She's the cute, hyperactive next door neighbor, and I believe her character throughout the movie. Josh Hartnett and Bruce Willis are also great in their roles, but for me to explain what those roles are would spoil too much of the story.I think that the pacing is spot on, the writing is believable and witty, and the story really does keep you guessing until near the end, when you start putting together the dots. Unlike Veronica Mars episodes, you actually have a chance to figure out the mystery before the very end, but when you have this much fun watching it unfold, what's the point? I don't know how they do this, but the movie takes itself seriously and pokes fun at various elements of dark humor throughout the film, and it's part of what keeps the movie watchable in repeat viewings.I have a 1080p LCD TV with an upscaling DVD player, and the video quality was excellent. Nothing to complain about there, or about the audio. The commentary track is actually pretty fun to listen to, and there are a couple of good deleted scenes to boot. I don't know why so many critics didn't like it, but it sounds like they were trying to be snooty because it felt like it was trying to be like Pulp Fiction at times if you put on your movie geek cap. Or maybe not every likes this brand of humor? It's not particularly unique, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Anyway, it's worth at least a rent if not a buy. I think you'll probably end up buying though so you can watch it again and again.

I saw this movie so many years ago, and I loved it so much. I waited long enough for my horrible memory to forget the ending and was able to watch it again with that same awe.

I’ve seen this movie soo many times. It’s a really good movie w a great all star cast. It’s got a good uniqueness and really nice style too.I wish more people knew about it. Rotten tomatoes can suck it on this one

One of the elements of a good movie is a well written script with multiple plot twists and Lucky Number Slevin delivers on both accounts! What's in a look? Well, you'll just have to watch it and see! 5/5 stars for me!

Muy buena película y gran calidad

Plus qu’une excellente surprise, voici une pépite savoureuse et débordante d’inventivité. Dès le début, le film affiche clairement sa particularité en exposant plusieurs scènes qui n’ont supposément rien à voir entre elles et en jouant sur les allées retours entre présent et passé, ce qui amène à se poser plusieurs questions. Une fois l’histoire principale figée au présent, 1999 pour le film, les réponses viennent petit à petit, mais il ne faut pas compter sur une résolution facile, car tout compte. Les dialogues, ciselés et d’une précision millimétrique, font partie d’un scénario d’une richesse absolue, construit en béton armé et qui débouche sur l’assemblage des pièces d’un puzzle géant et complexe, dévoilant des intrigues multiples à tiroirs, appuyés par des retournements de situation à tomber, le tout dans un rythme fluide et soutenu, qui vous assénera une claque, lors de la conclusion finale, car bien malin celui qui arrivera à démêler toutes les fausses pistes en présence, afin de parvenir à trouver le bon cheminement.Après avoir joué de malchance, un jeune homme nommé Slevin décide de partir à New York. Alors qu’il habite quelque temps dans l’appartement de son ami Nick Fisher, Slevin fait d’abord la connaissance d’une jeune femme, Lindsey, il voit ensuite deux hommes de main débarquer chez lui, à la recherche de Nick et se voit contraint de les suivre. Il est emmené devant un parrain du milieu New Yorkais, nommé le Boss, qui lui propose un marché, il consent à annuler la dette de Nick, montée à 96 000 Dollars, en échange d’un « service » : il devra éliminer le fils de son pire ennemi, le Rabbin, responsable de l’assassinat du sien. Il charge également le tueur professionnel Goodkat, de superviser l’affaire afin que tout soit effectué dans les délais, sous couvert du pseudonyme de M. Smith.Côté technique, le Blu Ray livre un très bon master, véritablement digne du support HD. L’image est superbe, affichant une netteté impeccable, avec nombre de détails. La colométrie n’est pas en reste, affichant un rendu presque parfait, plein de chaleur et le contraste bénéficie d’un noir intense. Le son est quant à lui, très bien rendu, et assure un parfait équilibre, surtout au niveau des dialogues très bien ajustés. Il est à noter que le traitement de la Version Française est de très bonne qualité, mais ma préférence va à la Version Originale avec Sous-Titres Français, plus dense et plus homogène, où l’on profite véritablement des voix des acteurs, apparaissant plus solides et plus dynamiques. Mais chacun fera selon son choix. Les suppléments sont bien présents, avec un Making-of, des scènes coupées, ainsi qu’un commentaire audio des acteurs Josh HARTNETT, Lucy LIU et du scénariste en VOST et un commentaire audio du réalisateur, toujours en VOST, le tout agrémenté des habituelles bandes annonces.Réalisé par Paul Mc GUIGAN, il est dommage que ce film soit relativement passé inaperçu lors de sa sortie en salles en 2006, offrant un succès public et critique, plus que moyen. Rempli de qualités, il offre également un casting impressionnant d’acteurs, tous plus doués les uns et totalement accaparés par leurs rôles.Dans le rôle-titre, on retrouve Josh HARTNETT, qui arrive à New York, après voir vécu une période de malchance très malvenue et qui va se retrouver mêlé à une histoire de gangsters ennemis, il tire parfaitement son épingle du jeu, en nuançant les facettes de son personnage et en jouant sur une ambiguïté très subtile, il est bien moins lisse qu’il n’y parait ; face à lui, deux pointures pour jouer les deux parrains de la mafia concurrents, Morgan FREEMAN interprète le Boss et Ben KINGSLEY interprète le Rabbin, liés depuis plus de vingt ans par leurs « affaires », ces deux grands acteurs rivalisent d’abattage et de présence magnétique à l’écran, afin de mieux se positionner dans l’art de voler des scènes clés ; dans le rôle du tueur mystérieux Goodkat, alias M. Smith, l’éclectique Bruce WILLIS, chargé de superviser le remboursement de la dette par Slevin, toujours aussi charismatique, il délivre des indices dans chacune de ses apparitions, encore faut-il les trouver ; enfin, dernier rouage important, Lucy LIU, qui incarne Lindsey, l’amie de Slevin, apparue un peu par hasard, comme un cheveu sur la soupe, on se questionne sur son rôle à venir, une fois de plus parfaite, elle continue d’être sur le fil du rasoir, afin de livrer une prestation pleine de justesse, dommage qu’on ne la voit pas plus.Thriller magnifique, qui confine au chef-d’œuvre, il est rare d’être autant déboussolée devant les premières minutes d’un métrage. Mais l’histoire, très addictive, vous happe dès les premières minutes et ne vous lâche plus, vous menant hors des sentiers battus, grâce à un scénario extrêmement bien ficelé et à une mise en scène au découpage d’une virtuosité sans pareille. Le montage, créé de manière à amplifier l’originalité du récit, vise un seul but, celui de manipuler encore plus le spectateur, afin de le mener vers un dénouement complétement inattendu, qui ne manquera pas de le laisser sur le carreau. Brillant et bluffant.

De esas películas que te tienen poniendo atención a los detalles y pensando; lo mejor en intriga. Cinco estrellas definitivamente.
