Healing Mushrooms: A Practical and Culinary Guide to Using Mushrooms for Whole Body Health

Recipes are SERIOUSLY lacking & the Author promotes his own products far too much
Great info on shrooms (although I agree with previous reviewers that he does not include sufficient scientific references). This is probably a good book for "beginner" mushroom lovers that buy their products from stores. HOWEVER, for wild mushroom hunters that get their stuff from the woods in their NATURAL environment: THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!I was most disappointed with the recipes. The author only highlight a narrow range of mushrooms (mostly medicinal) and the recipes call for dehydrated mushrooms and/or he promotes HIS OWN COMPANY'S mushroom powders (which I mean, hey it's his own book so it's fine if he wants to promote his own stuff, but if I had know I was paying for a giant advertisement for Four Stigmatic I would have never purchased it). If you are looking for recipes for wild-foraged mushrooms like trumpets, chanterelles, chicken of the woods, boletes, etc, then definitely look elsewhere (one of my faves is "Untamed Mushrooms" - stunning photography and absolutely delectable recipes for the most commonly foraged edible wild mushrooms).

Advertsiment for the author's mushroom powder business. No scienctific referencers support his extraordinary claims.
Tero writes with in the tone of Dale Carnegie self-help authority. Sadly, his salesmanship eclipses anything else. He highlights 10 popular medicinal mushrooms and writes about their different properties, but he NEVER cites any scientific authority to support his assertions.I was very hopeful that the recipes would be useful, but practically all of them sell Tero's mushroom powders rather than fresh mushrooms. There are only a couple of cooking ideas that are interesting to me.It's daunting these days to separate facts from fiction. Without referring to any external sources, we are left to take Tero's word for everything. Although he does tell a nice story about each different type of mushroom, these reeds are too thin to support the weight of his arguments. Since he is in the business of selling mushroom power at FourSigmatic, this hard selling book is basically a reader-supported advertisement. If Tero's "facts" were supported by some reasonable evidence, this book could be a game changer. He bandies about many scientific terms and ideas, but leaves readers without a single scientific reference to support his claims.

Straight-forward, useful guide and recipe book
"[Human] beings and mushrooms share roughly 85 percent of the same ribosomal RNA and almost 50 percent of the same DNA." - Healing MushroomsIf that doesn't make you want to find out more about mushrooms and their medicinal properties, I don't know what will. My mind is still blown by that little factoid. This book is a quick read, since it is mainly a recipe book--but don't skip the introductory chapters, as they teach you all about the kingdom of mushrooms (yep, shrooms have their own kingdom) and list profiles of what I guess you could call the mushroom super stars. The recipes are sorted by medicinal goal--regulate blood sugar, gut health, hormonal balance etc.--offer a variety of options for both savory and sweet cravings, and address various dietary preferences and needs. Note that all recipes are meatless, though, but that doesn't mean you can't add chicken to that 'shroom salad or bacon bits to those maitake muffins, for example.I also really appreciate the shopping guide that explains what to look out for when buying mushrooms, be it fresh or dried, to make sure you are able to identify quality products. The only criticism I have is that the all photographs were listed at the end. It might be just the case for the Kindle edition, but I'd like it better if the photos were placed alongside their recipes. All in all, a great book to start your journey into the (healing) world of mushrooms!

it sort of makes it feel like a branding advertisement
This book was extremely helpful for understanding mushrooms and their uses. As a dietitian, I am excited to take this information into my practice. However, it does feel a little weird because it's written by the owner of Four sigma.. it sort of makes it feel like a branding advertisement. Also I wish there were more clinical references for studies. All in all great though!

Mushrooms are awesome!
Shrooms!!!! They are awesome, and I am always looking for more information about them. This book is informative and easy to read and understand. I definitely feel that I am better able to explain my love of mushrooms and their healing properties to all those who will listen after reading through this book. . There are great tips to help you actually USE the recipes in the book instead of just thinking about it. AND recipes are divided into categories for specific health concerns: blood sugar regulation, chronic inflammation, gut health, immune support, etc. Tero did not let me down.

Informative, fun book!
I first heard about Four Sigmatic products through Sid Garza-Hillman and kind of wrote it off as just another wacky trend. Later on, I heard Tero talk about how he got interested in mushrooms and their healing effects on the Rich Roll podcast. I was intrigued so I decided to find out more by getting this book. It's really opened my eyes to the mushroom world, so to speak. Not only does he cover the basic knowledge about mushrooms and their medicinal properties, but the information about the extraction process and how to ensure you are getting a quality product is vital in my opinion.I haven't yet tried any of the recipes in the book, but I definitely plan to! I like that they incorporated recipes so you can see how exactly to incorporate mushrooms into your normal diet.Overall, a fun book to read by a fun guy (had to throw that in there) and a resource I know I'll come back to repeatedly.

Not that great, could have been so much better.
Not much to the book, half the book is recipes, the other is just a ramble of facts about mushrooms. You could probably find the same information in half an hour on the internet. No diagrams other than 1 or 2 poor sketches. No photos of the mushrooms referred to, but strangely lots of fancy arty shots of the recipes which serve very little purpose. The only pictures of the mushrooms are on the cover which aren't even labelled.I really wanted to like this book, I've listened to Tero on several podcasts and he is genuinely a fun-guy (his joke, not mine) but this book was a let down and could have been so much better.

A Mushroom Book like no other!!
I have been into healthy eating all my life, so why haven't I heard about the amazing properties that mushrooms have?? Thank goodness for Tero and his awesome company Four Sigmatic - I enrolled on their free Mushroom Academy and spent a few hours delving into the world of Fungi - but the more you learn, the more you crave to learn more!!I was super stoked to find out Tero had written this book and pre-ordered it at the beginning of September!! It came earlier than expected here in the UK and I have literally devoured it!! Treo has a fantastic style of writing, I feel like I'm sat having a conversation with him!! And the information on these amazing Shrooms is literally blowing my mind! The recipe's are going to be fun to try - Chaga Chai, Maitake Ginger Chews and the Key Lion's Mane Pie will be top of my list. Don't be put off if you are Vegan - loads of the recipes are vegan, and those that aren't literally need one or two easily swapped ingredients to make them so!Without doubt, this book together with a box of Chaga Elixir will be my go-to gift for all my family and friends at Christmas! Thank you Tero and Four Sigmatic for putting this book out there into the world :-) xx

Thx Tero and team, oh and thx Amazon for a super fast delivery.Day 1 listened to Rich Roll and Tero’s podcast, awesome even my wife listened.Day 2 ordered the book.Day 3 it arrived, thx Amazon.Day 4 fascinating reading material to keep us company on the way to Miami. We have had Chaga mushrooms from the Light Cellar in Calgary. If they are not yet stocking please give them a call, phenomenal people and they will be all over your products. Anyway after mushrooms in the house for 6minths we made chaga got chocolate minutes after discovering Tero,The book is not overly technical, a good smattering of humour and detailed enough to send anybody off on a discovery of better health. It will open anybody’s eyes beyond the standard American diet of supplemental multi vitamins and introduce them to the real thing.A note on the recipes, looking fairly straightforward and delicious.Cheers guys

Interesting on the subject of medicinal mushrooms
This was bought as a gift. My initial impression is that the first part of the book outlining the properties of medicinal mushrooms looks very interesting. I was dissappointed by the flimsy quality of the paper-usually not an issue if you are buying for yourself, but worth considering if bought as a gift. I will update this review when I have had time to assess the book more fairly.

A practical reference book with some great recipe ideas
This is a great reference guide to quickly look up the benefits of medicinal mushrooms. It helps clarify the difference between powdered mushrooms and mushroom extracts and appropriate doses for each. There are also helpful suggestions about when to eat for the maximum benefit and recipe ideas for drinks meals snacks and treats. If you want a practical guide to incorporating medicinal mushrooms in your diet and the benefits of doing so then look no further. Since reading the book medicinal mushrooms are now a regular feature of my diet and placebo or otherwise I feel better for it. If you are an athlete and haven't tried supplementing with cordyceps then give it a go the benefits are supported by a good scientific evidence base.
