Great Read
I enjoyed reading this. As a Chrirstian Romance Author who writes about Interracial Couples, I enjoyed reading about Rose and Fred. Overall, it was a good read.

Fun and cute baking adventure
This was really fun and cute. I loved all of the behind the scenes stuff we got with the characters, getting to know them, and getting to watch the little romance bloom between our two main characters. The baking contest itself felt like a little bit of an afterthought. I felt like we need a little more of that to round the story out, but all in all I enjoyed the characters enough that I didn't really care about the baking contest.

Enjoyable
This was a cute teen graphic novel about navigating senior year and paying for college. The main characters get creative and enter a cooking competition to win the money for college tuition. I enjoyed it and thought it was fun, but feel it is directly written towards the younger audience. If you are a parent, the male and female lead characters are friends and share a bedroom when they go off to competition and since this is a graphic novel it is depicted in the images as well although nothing explicit happens. Just a heads up in case this is something you do not want to showcase to your children.

Beautiful, lively artwork and a fun set of lead characters.
AboutRose has always wanted to be a baker, but lack of experience and money seem like insurmountable odds. But a chance opportunity to compete in a reality TV baking competition might just be what she needs to make her dreams come true.ThoughtsI usually start with the story and then talk about the art, but the art is just too good to hold off on. It's absolutely lovely! Distinct and appealing character designs, expressive characters, and some really solid paneling. The layout when Rose's parents broke the news to her was especially poignant. Art is consistent across the board with bright colors, competent backgrounds, and tantalizing food illustrations. I absolutely loved the energy of the artwork. The story was a fun ride, albeit a bit too ambitious for the page count. Everyone loves an underdog story, and Rose's dedication to being a good person, even in the face of adversity really warmed me. I think the romance between friends was probably my favorite thread (I love a childhood friend romance!), and the confession while on the London Eye was very romantic. Outside of the two leads though, other characters don't have much time to develop, which is a shame. The main antagonists in particular get very little time to develop as characters. Is Nicole so skilled that she's definitely going to win, or is she a cheat who needs to sabotage others? Does she actually see a kindred spirit in Fred, or is she just trying to make things hard for Rose? And does her partner have any contribution to the story at all? I see the framework of a great story that I enjoy, but I suspect I'd enjoy it more if it had time to breathe over more than one volume. The book also includes recipes, which I appreciate, because after reading all that, I desire baked goods!

Sweet YA Graphic Novel
Batter Royale by Leisl Adams is a YA graphic novel about a baking competition. Fred and Rose have been friends since they were children and now Rose is a waitress in the restaurant that Fred’s mom owns. Rose dreams of being a chef one day and loves to experiment in the kitchen. A series of events leads her to be invited to participate in a cooking competition called Batter Royale, but a few obstacles stand between Rose and achieving her dream.Batter Royale is a sweet graphic novel. There is a romantic element to the story, but that isn’t the primary storyline and it doesn’t distract readers from the main point of the story…Rose working to overcome obstacles to achieve her goals. In true graphic novel fashion, the story is told through both words and illustrations and readers must pay attention to both to get the full story. One of my favorite aspects of this book is that the recipes Rose bakes are all included in the book!I would recommend this book to readers age 12 and up. There is a little mild language, but nothing too extreme and the romantic aspects of the story are very PG.

Cute story
Thank you to the Abrams Kids and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. This is a cute middle grade/YA story about teamwork, competition, and following one’s dreams. I enjoyed what I was able to make of the story since the text was very blurry and unclear. I had to infer a lot of the context from the images and from whatever I was able to decode. The recipes between each section/chapter is such a great idea! I would’ve enjoyed them much more if they were legible. (Had to take off one star for the unclear and blurry font. Such a shame!) Hopefully, the published version would be much more legible and in full color. Looking forward to re-reading this book and the recipes after publication.

Things Heat Up in this Baking Competition
I absolutely LOVED this graphic novel because it combined two of my favorite things: graphic novel and a baking show competition. This baking show was awesome because it was kinda like an obstacle course built into the competition: think sand pit traps and swinging over fire and hostages. The characters were adorable and I adored their designs and backstories.Rosemary (adeptly nicknamed Rose) is sweet and sassy in all the right ways. She works at a diner and itches to get her hands flour dusty in the kitchen. Fred is the reluctant chef who doesn't want to leave his mom alone to run the diner, but gets swept along in Rose's eagerness to run off to London and win a baking competition school. While the author bakes up a great plot, the ending is almost a little too sweet. But if you like rich and decadent happy ever afters, this is the right mix for you!One day, I hope to see a cooking show like the ones in this graphic novel!
