Excellent Introduction to Robot Building for Young Children
We first viewed this book by checking it out at our local library. It is a great first book for a child that is interested in building robots. The instructions are clear, straightforward and they work. Although I have a technical background I do not have a lot of mechanical or machinery experience. It doesn't matter how technologically literate or mechanically handy you are when you have this book. The author really walks you through everything step-by-step, from the purchase of materials to project completion. In foresight of potential problems the author clearly explains what to do if you encounter multiple types of difficulties. Since acquiring this book I have seen my 7 year old son's knowledge of robotics and mechanics grow and it is already encouraging him in a technical career. If the child in your life shows any interest in how things work or constructing robots on their own, this is a great place to start them out. Because this book is standalone and not a kit it better opens up the opportunity for further investigation and experimentation which is encouraged by the author with a few directional suggestions. It also encourages their creativity when they see that they can purchase items at the hardware store, toy store and/or dollar store and build something totally different than what they started with. That is definitely the idea the author is trying to get across. The first robot you build is not going to rival those on the International Space Station but once you see what you can do with a few dollar store items and a hot glue gun you'll want to use what you've learned to build something better next time. This book is an all around great resource and inspiration for your budding engineer.

Good Quality, Good Value, Well Written, Engaging for Mechanically Minded Children 8-12
Book appears well written for ages 8+ who are mechanically minded and have access to typical home items/products. Activities are engaging and somewhat independent for ages 8 to 10..Ages 11-12+ would be more independent.
