Screenprinting: The Complete Water-based System

A comprehensive guide
I always like to have more than one source book for any artmaking activities that I'm engaged in and this book is excellent. Well written in clear English, good selection of accompanying photos and some very helpful ideas and suggestions. You won't be disappointed.

Not the best manual for the kitchen table artist new to screenprining
This is a beautifully produced book with lots of information, but I think it is very much geared for the serious practioner/student and not so helpful for the kitchen table artist.Read in conjunction with some other simpler books I have found it to be quite helpful. It is inspirational to see the Barbara Rae, Wilhemina Burns-Graham and Mary Newcomb prints and how they are built up.Lascaux products are the printing colours etc., used in the book and mentioned incessantly and this means that the terms used are more difficult to understand if you are using different manufacturers products. It also seems very Americanised in the terms used, so I was surprised to see that the authors practised in Scotland.

This is not a practical manual for beginners
It is instead very technical and mostly deliberates over the wrongs of past printing methods. I bought this book in anticipation of reading more about the complete water based system of screenprinting. It does deal with this, but you have to read nearly the whole book about the toxicity of past oil based methods to find this. I didn't really want to read about methods I wasn't interested in. As a beginner to screen printing I felt this book really had little to offer me.

This book is really for someone who has a studio or at least has the room and the notion of making a studio. You will not find anything for beginners in this book. It is really for someone who is doing fine art prints and not a casual novice wanting to print a few tshirts. The lay out of the book is terrible and you are kind of expected to understand a fair bit about screen printing in the first place. It is really a reference guide rather than a practical guide to printing.
