A Goldmine of Information.
A really great book.I am trying to educate myself about art and this book will definitely help.It does indeed contain images, descriptions and notes on each and every one of the one thousand and one pictures. It also gives a very brief biography of the artist who painted the picture.Other useful information includes the size of the work, the medium used and where it is today. It is a real goldmine of information.

Fantastic.
Just what I was looking for! It gives a marvellous overview of painting from around the world from 1400 bc to 2015. It is printed on good quality paper and all the illustrations are in colour. Most of them take up half a page, with commentary on the other half, but some are full page illustrations. It contains a good many famous works, but also includes a large number that I at least had never seen or heard of. I am not an artist and have never studied art, I just like looking at paintings. Now that my gallery-visiting days are over, I am delighted to have this terrific collection to browse through. Although it is a thick, heavy book, it is normal book size, so is quite comfortable to read on your lap. Unbelievably good value.

Good value; lots of information; pictures could be larger
Good information on every painting and its painter, with excellent selection of paintings for all the eras up to present day. Some of the 21st Century choices do not seem to be of the same standard as the 20th Century and early choices. Only time will tell whether these recent choices will stand the test of time. Good to see a Banksy in the list. The book format is not large and most of the pictures are only half or quarter of a page; too small to make out significant details and hence the 4 stars. Overall, good value for money for the wealth of information provided, though the format could be larger.

Excellent
I’ve had this book for a while and regularly read a few pages at a time. It remains robust and in good shape. The presentation is good. Most paintings occupy half a page with corresponding text below. Inevitably one thinks of favourite paintings that might have been included, this this hardly detracts from an excellent and informative work. Definitely worthwhile.

A magnificent, endlessly browseable art book.
This 960-page updated edition(2011) of '1001 Paintings' is one of the most comprehensive and informative art books that I've come across.Professor Stephen Farthing has selected paintings from pre-1400 to the 2000s and each painting is accompanied by an illuminating and accessible text written by one of an international team of art experts. The paintings, which include many overlooked masterpieces, are listed by artist and title and the book concludes with a useful glossary of art terms. Most people are unlikely to see all the original 1001 paintings discussed here in their lifetime but this magnificent, endlessly browseable book is an excellent alternative.

An excellent reference book that would be improved if you could quickly reference by gallery, country, city. etc
An excellent reference book that would be improved if you could quickly reference by gallery, country, city.Googling the books name and "brextontravels" has a link to a google workbook sheet that contains those filters cross referenced to the page numbers. The spreadsheet is for the version published in 2011 and updated in 2014. The 2011 edition has over 30 changes in paintings compared to the earlier edition and the painting are in a different order.
