Joraform JK 125 Compost Tumbler

Q: Has anyone used through s cold and snowy winter? I want to keep composting during a new england winter. Thanks for all response so far.

it didn't compost for me starting early winter (idaho in the mountains gets pretty cold) It works good in the warmer months and i like it but i bought with the expectation that it would work year round and it didn't for me; compost froze.

Q: Is the joraform insulated with styrofoam?

This a good question because the thick, white insulation that lines the interiors of both chambers will look in a still photograph like (crumbly) styrofoam. However, it isn't. It's a hardy, pliable closed-cell foam. No pieces have torn off from its being jabbed by garden tools.

Q: What are your thoughts on buying two JK270 tumblers vs. one JK400? total cost about the same but two JK270s have 140 gallons vs. one JK400's 106 gal.

Nicky Scott tells how to triple the throughput of a Jora tumbler in his book "How to Make and Use Compost: The Ultimate Guide".https://www.amazon.com/How-Make-Use-Compost-Ultimate/dp/1900322595/ref=sr_1_1Ordinarily, you would slowly fill one compartment of the Jora for about six weeks, then let it mature while you fill the other compartment for six weeks. However, using the Jora to age compost for a long time is a waste of its expensive capacity. According to Nicky Scott, food scraps only need to cook for two or three weeks in the Jora to lose their appeal to vermin. After that you can transfer the contents out to a larger, cheaper static bin that does not need to be as rat-proof, where it can sit for two or three months to finish maturing. Thus you can fill and empty the entire tumbler on a four-week cycle rather than a 12-week cycle. (Two weeks to fill a side, two weeks to age it while you fill the other side, then transfer the compartment to your big bin.) You only need the tumbler to contain the food scraps while they are relatively fresh and need to be kept away from pests and flies.
