A generic detective story which falls to bring in victims or villains to bring it to life
This story is a classic Batman detective story. Someone Batman is recently acquainted with dies of something, Bruce Wayne is suspected and Batman has to clash with the police to get the job done and find the real culprit (to the murder not all those poor thugs who were viciously beaten, we know who committed that crime). The story however just never makes me care about the new characters introduced, the gang who gets involved is just generic so again don't feel invested and the denouement is pretty weak due to the previous two points. It could have been good but fell flat instead.

The story running through issues #30-34 of the ‘New 52’ Batman – Detective Comics series is collected, along with Annual #3, as Batman Detective Comics Volume 6: Icarus HC (The New 52). This is a well-scripted and illustrated self-contained story that runs through all the issues in this volume. The Annual, which is positioned at the back of the volume, actually takes place before the opening of the Icarus storyline, so it can be a bit disorienting if you read it last.It felt like an ‘old fashioned’ Batman story - helped by me remembering the original gang-boss Squid from his appearances in the 1980s - with an intricate drugs and gang related story; but also by the artwork, which, although using a ‘painted’ style, also uses a lot of traditional poses and layouts from those old days to tell the story in a clear and fluid way. A lot of this will not really be apparent if you haven’t read the comics of yesteryear, but won’t detract from your reading pleasure; you just won’t have the added nostalgia we old people get when we spot references.Despite its old fashioned feel this story is taking place during the Batman Eternal storyline, and there are cross-references to the situation over there, as well as to the missing Damian. This is a pleasant, interesting Batman story, taking place where Batman stories should, in Gotham, among the local criminal elements and corrupt society, and not among the high-tech international organisations that are really outside the dark and claustrophobic world that originally made up the Batman mythology.THE SPOILER ZONETHE SPOILER ZONEIssue #30 opens with Batman busting a gang of drug dealers/distributors who are holding prisoners to train as runners. They are also sampling their product - Icarus - and their leader is the brother of crime-boss the Squid. Their leader is rescued from the bust by a rival gang - the Kings of the Sun. Bruce Wayne is later to be found at the Extreme Motorsports arena where a new star is performing - Annie “The Eagle” Aguila, whose mother is negotiating with Bruce for funds to develop Gotham’s waterfront. However, shadowy “businessmen”, who own the local senator, want the waterfront for their own development. The issue ends with various criminal elements making examples of people who have annoyed them…Issue #31 opens with Detective Harvey Bullock questioning Bruce Wayne about the death of Elena Aguila on his doorstep last issue; he recognises Icarus from an episode in the DC Comics Zero Year HC (The New 52) (Batman) event, and now he thinks Bruce is responsible for giving it to Elena. Batman is soon on the trail of the drug, as is Bullock, but his prisoners from last issue’s Bat-bust are dead in their cell… Annie Aguila is also chasing the drug; while Batman finds more illegal immigrants, and their bodyguard at the docks…Issue #32 opens with Batman recovering Elena Aguila’s car from the bottom of the harbour, and Bullock collecting it and the illegal immigrants rescued by Batman last issue. Batman meets Annia Aguila at the waterfront. Bullock finds a trail linking the shipping containers to a Wayne Industries executive, who we met last issue. Meanwhile, Batman confronts the crime-boss ‘Squid’, and discovers how he got his name…Issue #33 opens with the biker gang Kings of the Sun catching Batman as he escapes from the Squid’s aquarium; fortunately the police arrive in time to rescue them. Meanwhile, Detective Bullock is questioning the corrupt Wayne Industries executive in an alley and gets a lead on the senator, as well as on the destination of the missing container. In other news, Batman has found the bikers’ base, and then gets a lead to the same destination as Bullock is headed; they collide and a showdown begins…Issue #34 opens with Annie Aguila holding a gun to the head of the man who killed her mother - according to her long-lost father, Holter, who happens to be the head of the biker gang. Meanwhile, Batman and Bullock’s showdown is interrupted by an explosion on the waterfront. There, they discover that the bikers had a metahumans hidden away, but someone hijacked him and has released him on the waterfront. Batman uses an armoured costume to drive off the meta, before the Squid (the Giant one) joins in the fight, and everyone ends up in the water…Annual #3 takes place before the opening of the Icarus storyline. Here we see the back-story of some of the minor characters, and how the missing drug shipment from the beginning of the storyline got to be missing, how one of the characters is connected to Annie Aguila (and not her father), and, basically, how the entire plot-line gets set in motion. There are a couple of unrelated sub-plots as well, as we get a preview of the Bat-armour that appears in the finale of the story.

Very much satisfied. Fantastic!
Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato have done it again. Creative and Mesmerizing art & storytelling presenting Batman as a master detective. I'm glad I bought it. Thanks Amazon!

4 1/2 Stars. Great street oriented Detective story.
Excellent story. It's good too see Batman in a story that goes with the title of the book. Out of the first 6 volumes of Detective Comics this one is the best I read so far. The art is different then the other man batman titles out their. Really enjoyed it, went good with the mood of the story. Yes there is no big time batman villain in this volume, but that's fine. This is a very street oriented tale and didn't need one. This volume collects the 5 part Icarus story and Detective Comics Annual 3 which also ties to the main storyline.Overall excellent. While I love Snyders Batman and Tomesi's Batman and Robin is really good too, it's nice to see this volume of Detective Comics take a different direction. I believe the same team is on Vol 7 which brings back Anarky. Can't wait to read that, hopefully it's as good as Icarus.

Solid Batman
I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It's focus was on Batman eliminating a street drug after a potential business partner is found to have involvement. This story forces you to flip back and forth to keep things in order but I see that as a credit to the story telling rather than a takeaway. A solid detective-esque story in my opinion.

The batgod
I like this new team making batman use his brain rather then his brawn even though there's still a hell a lot of brawn. If you liked there run on flash you would love there take on batman. If you haven't read batman in awhile this is a great jumping on point.

The detective is black with a great mistery
Great mistery, it is "detective comics" for a reason. Well written and good art. Worth it
