Q: If this product doesn't come with a controller, what are the "modes" that the description is talking about?

The Mods are changing the colors but you will be not be able to change colors without a power supply or the control pad so basically all you're getting is the lights it's not worth purchasing unless you are would I have power supply it and control pad these will be additional lights so you should buy the combo set

Yes, a 12v battery works fine. I’m using these in a DIY lightsaber

This lamp is IP20, not waterproof

Q: Can 2 or more of these lights be daisy chained together? If so, what's the maximum number of strips I can run on one 12v power supply?

Yes, you can chain them together. You just have to remember amperage and the wire size that is on the strip. If you chain to many you risk over amperage through the first strip. These strips are like 50 watts each so if you have 3 strips chained you will need a power supply that can handle 150 watts.
