Excellent DVD burner, great price, can't go wrong with LiteOn
A quality DVD drive and burner from a very reputable manufacturer. I paid £19 for it which is amazing. I remember paying well over £100 about 15 years ago for an external optical drive and they were very bulky back then. The LiteOn is very light and compact. It has rubber feet to help stop it moving around and the casing material looks very smart. It only requires 1 USB connection unlike some other makes which need 2 (to draw more power). Performance is good and it's compatible with a very wide range of CD/DVD formats including M-DISC (the discs that last 1000 years).I suggest people avoid buying external DVD drives that have unknown brand names. Amazon is flooded with them and the sellers give away their drives in exchange for a favourable review. This distorts the honesty of the reviews. Stick to the well known brands such as LiteOn, Samsung, Asus and so on.

the drive worked fine and quietly
Thought I'd future proof and avoid the need to install a DVD/CD RW drive in any future PCs I build, rather than fix the existing internal drive in my current PC. Having had a search around, I decided on the EBAU108 LiteOn drive, which doesn't explicitly say it is USB 3 or USB 2 even though it uses only one cable/USB connection for data and power (USB 2 drives often need a twin USB cable arrangement to supply sufficient power or a separate power supply). The drive arrived today, I plugged it into a USB 3 socket on my Windows 10 PC and ripped the new Audio CD, one I'd just bought for my wife and the trigger for needing a working drive. Yes, I'm of that generation that still likes the CD album in my hand, as opposed to a download). Anyway, the drive worked fine and quietly. Then, purely as test, I wrote about 4GB of data to a DVD R+ disc, again worked fine, took less than 10 minutes. Just checked the box, it quotes USB 2 speeds for different media.I'd have given it 5 stars but the item delivered differs from the one advertised. It looks the same and has the same model number but, when you turn it over, the USB cable is not built-in and there's no recess to hold the cable. Instead, there's a standard USB cable, quite thick, presumably to cope with the current/power needed to operate the drive, and a USB socket on the back of the drive. There are pros and cons to a built-in cable: neat and tidy but fairly short and, if it fails, it would be difficult to replace; whereas a standard cable can be longer and very easily replaced (I've got umpteen of these cables from other gadgets). So, on balance, maybe, a separate cable is the better option and I've kept it - see image showing connector, cable and USB 2 data on side of box.Overall, yes, I'd recommend this drive. It might be a very good choice for those with older PCs/laptops with USB 2 only and a single spare USB connection.

Execptional drive from a Renowned manufacturer - Absolutely no competition in its class.
Looking or a quality dvd writer now that prices have come down since Bluray.Thia is the product to purchase. It supports CD-R, DVD +/- R, DVD RW and DVD ROM.It's slim, quiet, doesn't rattle. Adjusts its sdpped depending on application i.e. slow and extra quiet for DVD playback, higher, faster transfer rates for data. An added bonus, it only requires a single USB port for both power and data, unlike many others on the market tha requie two USB ports in order to function.Compared to the current number one best seller - if you read the reviews, that things is big, noisy and just not worth the money even tho its more expensice for some reason.Lite-on have been making drives for decades, they know exactly what their game is, and this device is s a star product. What's more, plug it into your TV with a short usb extension cable (not supplied) and you can pllay DVD'a, view photo's, videos etc direct from thr drive - no computer required.Take it from someone that has been in the industry for 16 years.http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FWLCD6G?ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0

Plug n play, no issues, good price
I've used lite-on in the past and never had any problems, so it's a brand I trust. I was sceptical that a USB connection would be able to power a DVD drive, but it works without any problems. I plugged it into my Windows 10 PC , it was recognised straight away, and was installing from a DVD within minutes. Genuine plug n play. It's incredibly thin and light, so I suspect someone careless could bend or snap the tray when clicking the DVD into place. I wouldn't let young children use it! Otherwise, recommended.

Good value for money
This item works well with my laptop & tablet, that do not have CD/DVD media access. I have used it with HP x360/15 model and Surface Pro 2 tablet running Windows 10 Home and 10 Pro respectively. The burner was used with no external "powered" USB hub. Just plug in and the device shows in 'This PC' window...ready to copy, create and burn...the main purpose for purchased. The device comes with a detachable USB cable...making it easier to store. Do not need the included software package, Great buy

Overall good but with one limitation
Overall good. But when connected to TV to watch a DVD, it has to be started again if paused midway. This is a big limitation as we often need to pause while watching a long movie and if we cant continue after pausing, it does not serve the purpose fully.

Recommended if you have a laptop with no drive.
This is a nice little drive, and it does a decent job. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no additional USB connection required to power the drive for writing. The previous drive I had could read on 1 cable, but a 2nd was needed for the additional power when writing. Nice. All you need is your drive, USB cable, and a full power USB port. With the drive being so slim, there doesn't feel like there is much too it. It's got a bit of flex and wouldn't take much of a beating. I nudged the drive tray when I got it on day one (my fault) and it did require me to open it to sort it out.Lastly, the drive can be heard quite easily. Again because it's so small and thin, there isn't much to contain the sound of moving parts.Worth the money.

Light weight, compact and very useful for newer thin laptops with no disc drives
