Makings Hardwood Cutting Gauge is a simple tool - it's a piece of wood with a big groove in it. The idea is to wrap a long strip of cloth around it [like a bandage around a finger] and then cut along the groove with a sharp pair of scissors to leave short strips all about the same length, app. 80mm [3¼"] - ideal for rag rug making. The secret to making a good one is getting the length of the cut strips right and sanding the surface of the cutting gauge so it's textured enough to wrap the cloth around easily, without a lot of slipping, but smooth enough the cut bits fall away without clinging on: Makings cutting gauges were developed and are made, in Cornwall, by people who also make rag rugs. The cut strips come off about 80mm [3¼"] long [ideal for making a shaggy rag rug] and the texture of the surface makes them easy to use. Makings Hardwood Cutting Gauge is made from sustainable beech [a perfect match for Makings Original Rag Rugger which makes quick and easy work of rag rug making]. The groove is around 5mm wide x 13mm deep so it can be used with dress making or other large scissors. [Textile materials in images are for illustration purposes only].
