The Shakespeare Stealer (Shakespeare Stealer, 1)

Great Read
The book definitely kept my son’s attention. It had a good plot with some good twists in it. The heavy Glockney accent of the main character was hard at times. It was hard for my son to decipher the slang words. But overall a good read.

Highly Recomend!
The Shakespeare Stealer was by far one of the best historical fiction books I have ever read. I started off by having to read this book for school but I enjoyed it so much that I went on to read Shakespeare's Scribe and Shakespeare's Spy. The reason I give this book only four stars is because the first two or three chapters drag on and are hard to get through. Once you get through Widge's life as an orphan and his apprenticeship at Dr. Bright's the book is action packed and forces you to read, and read, and read on. Unlike some books I have read in the past The Shakespeare Stealer has a very satisfying ending. This was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventurous books! :-)

A fictional look at an Elilzabethan theater company
In Gary Blackwood's "The Shakespeare Stealer" we meet the orphan, Widge, who, taught a form of shorthand by the cold-blooded clergyman who takes him from the orphanage, is then sold to the mysterious Falconer to transcribe Shakespeare's "Hamlet" so that the the head of a regional theater company can have a well-written new play to present to provincial audiences. Widge manages to follow the play, but loses the tablet on which it is transcribed. He stays with the company in hopes of recovering his transcription We get a child's eye view of what goes on in an Elizabethan Shakespeare Company, get an unromantic view of the elderly Queen Elizabeth and Widge gets the family he's never had. The novel offers action, details about the every day workings of an Elizabethan theater company, and a touching coming of age story

A fun read for tweens
It is the year 1601, and Will Shakespeare is testing some of his plays in the Globe Theater in London, when the 14-year-old orphan Widge is hired to steal one of the play scripts. In the process of gaining access to the theater, Widge is befriended by the troupe, and they treat him as one of their company. Now he must choose whether to betray his friends or risk punishment from his master. An exciting historical novel for grades 4-7, and I admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult! I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, Shakespeare's Scribe (Shakespeare Stealer)

History comes alive
This novel set in Elizabethan England captures the sights and sounds of that time period accurately. I use it as a novel study for Grade Eight students, because it augments the study of The Renaissance so well. The characters are well developed and interesting. The author's use of humour to sustain the reader's interest helps to keep reluctant readers engaged, Customs of daily life give lots of opportunities for discussion. This novel, first of three, motivates readers to continue reading the series - a bonus for parents and teachers who are looking for books for boys and girls who don't like to read.

Excellent historical fiction
'The Shakespeare Stealer' is an excellent novel for informing children (11-14 years) about life in London during the time that Shakespeare lived. Blackwood has woven a absorbing plot which readers will enjoy whilst also learning a lot about London during those times and how tough life was in those days especially for orphans and apprentices. This would be an excellent novel to read before embarking on a study of one of his plays.

A good read...
My daughter really enjoyed this book. At 13 she is trying to grind through Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet and this was such a nice fun read to keep her in the mood of the times, without the challenge of Shakespeare.

School curriculum book
My youngest son informed me that this book was on his curriculum and that he didn't have a copy of it from the school, so I picked it up on Amazon. To be honest I've yet to read it myself, but both my kids have read it and highly recommend it as an entertaining read...
