Has its limitations, but I love it-Even far 18 months
I purchased this a few days ago and as always with amazon I was impressed at how quickly it arrived considering P&P was free.It look and feels like a serious bit of kit, and looks a lot more expensive than it is. As stated in the title of this review it does have its limitations as others have mentioned it wont do iTTL but this doesn't bother me, what it does do it does very well for the money. It works both on camera and off camera, it comes with a little stand for mounting it to a tripod in the box, the range of power is more than adequate for me as an amateur photographer and I have to say I am seriously very glad I bought it.So why only four stars??? It clearly states that it is for ALL Sony cameras and it isn't. It works with my Sony DSC-R1 which has a standard hot shoe mount identical to most Canon's and Nikon's but does not fit my Alpha A300 ( and I believe all Alpha models have the same hot shoe ) straight out of the box (No adapter is included). This isn't a major concern however as I purchased a Pixel hot shoe adapter for my Alpha on here for 10.00 which brings my total cost to £47 ( A steal compared to Sony's own speed-light costing 265.00) I just wish it explained this in the product description as I would have ordered it at the same time, and wouldn't be sitting here waiting for the adapter to arrive so I can use it on camera (it still works off camera)I am going to buy another couple of these as fill in flashes with a couple of cheap light stands.Great Product, Great Price, just wish the description had been more accurate*****UPDATE******I recently got rid of all my sony and nikon cameras and purchased the D7100 Nikon and this flash still works perfectly. It works much better with the Nikon range as it requires no adapter like the Sony's do, however it did work as stated above with both my A300 and my A77. However it always felt a little floppy on the adapter. As with all my previous DSLR's the flash does NOT support TTL or iTTL but does work in manual mode ( For Nikon users: set your mode dial to S for shutter priority set to your cameras sync speed (1/250 for the D7100) with the jog wheel, turn on the flash and set it to Manual using the buttons on the back of the flash. You can then fire the flash when you press your cameras shutter button. If the flash is too heavy try adjusting the flash head to bounce the flash, and use the + & - buttons to increase or decrease the power of the flash's output) I have now had this item for nearly 18 months and have used it on both the nikon and sony platforms and this flash still works perfectly (with a set of rechargeable duracells I bought from amazon too) never once has this flash let me down. At the £35 price tag I paid for it I think this is truly remarkable and makes the flash not only a must have but also a no brainer. It really is a purchase every photographer should make even if it's just to keep as a back up. I mean honestly you can't even buy a decent polarising filter for £35 these days. I've been meaning to buy more of these but as this one has served me so well I haven't needed to. I fully intend to get a couple more of these though as in slave mode they work absolutely faultlessly as off camera flash's.

A bargain and works a treat with my Fuji HS30 bridge camera
Works a treat with my Fuji HS30 bridge camera. The gun has a Guide Number of 38 at 100 ISO film speed. The hot shoe only has one central contact meaning the gun only has manual flash power control (eight levels).Initially I could not get the gun to work on the HS30, so I looked through the camera settings menu and found the external flash option was set to OFF: for some strange reason, setting it to ON fixed the problem...Duh! ;) Also be aware that with the Fuji HS30, the external flash hot shoe only fires in Manual, Programmed, Aperture and Shutter Priority modes: it does not fire in EXR, Auto, SP1 or SP2 modes. If you need the flash power setting automatically controlled by the Fuji HS30, you need the Fuji EF42 flash gun (Amazon product code ASIN B004NROYVM) at £140 which is a Fuji-customised SunPak. Whilst being able to have the flash power controlled by the camera is useful on a film camera, in my book it's not worth an extra £110 for the occasional shot or two with a digital camera where more light is needed.THE GOOD:PriceHas a pull-down flash diffuser and pull-out white reflector above the flash areaFlash head has 90 degree vertical rotation and 270 degree horizontal movement (90 one way, 180 the other) for bounce flash use (or even blinding yourself if you so wish!!).Has two slave modes of operation as well as manual mode, meaning it can be used as a slave fill-in flash gun.Takes 4X AA batteries - including rechargeable types.Seems quite well made and sturdy.Comes with a 1/4 inch tripod mounting bracket for slave use.The NOT-SO-GOOD:Cannot be used for any length of time with rapid firing at high power: any more than 10 shots in a minute or so and the gun will auto shut-down to prevent overheating. Seems to be immune to overheating at low power settings tho'.Overall, a reasonably made inexpensive flash gun for those who have a hot shoe external flash connector and only need manual flash power control, or for occasional use where more flash power is needed than can be provided by the camera's on-board flash.Especially recommended for the novice photographer or those on a limited budget.

Good value, powerful enough for medium sized rooms.
I used this with a Nikon P7800 compact camera. It was bought for a family event in a medium sized hotel room and worked well. Pretty quick to recycle charge at medium power settings. I used Duracell AA batteries.

Good value, simple but confusing instructions
I loved the irony of getting this device through a "flash sale". Groan. So it was good value for money as I had wanted one for a while. I use flash guns for the photography of scale models so I didn't need through-the-lens metering. Instead this flash has a power-level function. I have not tried this yet but it is all I need. With digital cameras and still-life subjects you can just take various shots and choose the ones that come out best. It comes with a neat little table-top mount especially for users like me who won't mount the gun on top of a camera. Handy. As for the functions the flash has these took some experimentation to figure out what they meant. It has a manual mode for triggering via the hot shoe. I tried this on my Olympus E-450 and it worked just fine. The other two modes ("S1" and "S2") are somewhat more cryptic due to the agonisingly tortuous English language used in the instructions. These two are slave functions triggered by the flash output of a primary gun. So you don't need any wiring nor need to worry about hot shoe compatibility. (The S2 functionality works with a red-eye-prevention flash where it only gets triggered by the second flash not the first.) One curious feature of the phone is the built-in white reflector. In mine the reflector is on the outside of the built-in diffuser which means it cannot be used to bounce the flash. It seems pointless which made me think that the gun had not been assembled correctly. Bizarre.

Great!
Really good product. Works as expected and by the price it's a really good deal.
