Is there place for shifting spanners in cooking?
What an excellent book! If you, like me, don't really cook but would like to learn how to, this book is for you. It starts with the tools and kit you need and offers great advise for getting kitted out, conquering supermarkets, explaining what's available in different seasons, then takes you into how to prepare and cook stuff. It focuses on teaching you how to prepare and cook things, not just make certain recipes, so you become seriously versatile. To get an idea of the writing style... "Even if a man has never so much as reheated some Ready Brek, they've somehow supposed to be able to barbecue. It's in our genes, apparently. This is cobblers. Barbecuing is better if you think about it a bit" and the chapter goes on to offer excellent snippets of advise on how to barbecue different things and get the most out of that rusty old device.About 60% of the book is recipes, all easy and straight forward, many involve beer (2 pints - one to test and one to pour in). Once I read it, without having to refer to it at all, I was able to produce a highly credible Spag Bol, without burning myself, cutting a finger or ruining my expensive watch. This is the Yorkie Bar of Cook Books, just get it!

Makes straight-forward dishes easy and accessible for novice cooks.
Brilliant cookbook in the style of the old Hayes manuals. Makes straight-forward dishes easy and accessible for novice cooks; however also has some really useful info for confident cooks too eg their charts on cuts of meat are fab! No obscure jargon - everything is doable. Great book for boys (and non-Cheffy girls).

Excellent but not for total beginners!
Purchased as a gift for my Fiancé, he informs me that this book is amusing, well organised and that it provides a good selection of recipes to start off any aspiring cook. The reason I chose this book over others is because I noticed that it does not simply give recipes, as in it does not just list the ingredients, oven temperature and method. It actually takes the time to EXPLAIN the basics of cooking which my partner (and even myself!) have enjoyed learning from.I will say that this book does not cover all basics however, I did have to find a youtube video to demonstrate to my most beloved what "simmering" looks like, but I imagine most people would find this book sufficient. It is not, however, suitable for absolute beginners so please bear this in mind when purchasing.Overall I am very pleased with the product, packaging and speed of delivery.

Great gift - funny, informative and with great recipes.
Bought as a gift for a man that's hopeless in the kitchen. The recipes are labelled in skill level and most have cheeky comments in them. The writers sense of humour is apparent throughout. Along with recipes it's got information about seasonal foods, cuts of meat, storage and everything you could want to know. We especially enjoyed the troubleshooting pages! Much more than a cookbook.

Ignore the silly bits - this is a great book
I got this book after much-deserved pressure from my wife to take more of a hand in the kitchen. I have found that the recipes are easy to follow and have got me involved, in fact actually enthusiastic about doing more cooking. There are a few cringey lines in keeping with the blokey car-maintenance metaphor but the book is genuinely good.
