Drought-Resistant Planting: Lessons from Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden

A classic by any other name
This a reprint of Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden published back in 2000 with all of the same photographs by Steven Wooster. Both photographs and Beth Chatto's prose are excellent but one can't help thinking that the publishers are attempting to cash in by changing the title as they have - coming as it does a quarter of a century after the gardens were begun this could truly be a lessons learnt volume and not just a renamed reissue! Buy this book if you don't already have the earlier edition - you will not be disappointed and will find plenty of inspiration if you are attempting to garden in these conditions. If you already own the earlier title then do not be fooled by the new title - my newly purchased copy will be passed on to a budding gardener by way of introducing to them to the great writing of Beth Chatto and I'll hang on to my well-thumbed original edition.

Written primarily for the US southern states....
It's important to note that this is primarily written for the American market. Something I didn't realise until it arrived and I realised that a lot of the plants are unsuitable for a northern climate. Bit annoying as I've previously bought the book as a gift and only flipped through it. Not a complete waste of money but it's disheartening to see what lovely things can be grown in the great heat of a Californian patch of shade!

Essential reading
The bible! Inspirational, informative and instructive. Best used after visiting her garden and seeing how it's done. Essential reading if you want a garden of interest. A dry/gravel garden is possible in all sorts of situations.
