Quite possibly the best thing ever invented.
Approximately two months ago I spent £7.99 on a mechanical burger press. It was essentially a shallow burger mould with a big circular disk that you press on it to shape a burger. £7.99 to shape a burger, and then totally reshape it whilst you fondle it out and end up with a destroyed burger. I quickly gave up on the idea of making burgers. However...I am a student, I have limited supplies when it comes to food, due to cost issues. I usually stick to Morrisons bulk bags of frozen chicken breast or frozen minced beef. I started to experiment with what I could make with the minced beef, as chucking it in pasta was just getting boring. Burgers quickly sprung to mind, and after buying the burger press which I spoke of earlier I was severely knocked back. But do not fear.I was browsing the kitchenware on the lighting deals section around Black Friday on Amazon and saw this, for only £9.99. I thought there is no way it will be any good for £9.99, even at it's original price of £19.99 or whatever it said I had my doubts. But I decided to take a leap and give it ago.Attempt one: I used my old burger press to press frozen minced meat into a disk and place it in. After about 10 minutes I opened it up to find a sort of bubbling liquidised mince. Hmmm. I kept it in for about 30 minutes, far longer than it suggests, but this mince was frozen so it needed longer. I opened it up and decided it wouldnt get any better. It was so thin and so dodgy that I could see through the gaps in the burger. FAIL.Attempt two: This time I decided to chuck the burger press and just put frozen mince into the little moulds quite densely. After 10 minutes it was far from done, and after 30 minutes it was just cooked mince, no burger form. I hoped they would bond but I was wrong. FAIL.Attempt three: I have been using this frozen mince for about 3 months now, since I started Uni. It is so cheap and lasts so long. I have always considered defrosting a bit of it but I was always a bit iffy about doing so, because nowhere on the packaging does it suggest it and I couldn't find many answers online. Last night I decided to give it a go. I left some in a clean sealed container over night in the fridge. About an hour ago I took it out, it looked just like normal mince which is great! I moulded it all into a ball, then flattened it out a little, although it was still quite fat but this is what I wanted. I popped it in and instantly it began to sizzle away, the lid wouldn't fully shut naturally due to such a fat burger but, I pressed it down hard for a proper grilling. After 10 minutes I approached the machine, all past attempts I have feared looking in. If I didn't open it, the results wouldn't be bad. Because they wouldn't exist until they were observed. Schrodinger's burger if you will.I opened it up and wow, proper wholesome looking burgers, I got out a knife and gave them a wiggle, the beef held together like an army of cattle rising against the meat industry. No crumbles, no cracks, no breaks, just perfection. I quickly grabbed some cheese and popped it ontop of the burger, and pressed the lid closed again. After a minute or so I reopened it and...my burger had disappeared! I quickly noticed it was stuck to the lid so gave it a wiggle and off it came. I wacked them into my pre-prepped burger bun with lettuce, ketchup, burger sauce and gurkins, and realised my life was better now.I sat enjoying my burger, and as I took my last bite I looked across to the burger grill. Covered in oil and cheese. I knew it was all too good to be true. Is one burger really worth having to scrub and chisel cheese and grease off it? Maybe, maybe not. But that was not an issue here. I approached the product armed with multiple cleaning tools. Poured some cold water from a sponge and suddely the cheese began to run off the lid grill and the cheese on the bottom detached. The non stick on this is AMAZING. It is incredibly easy to clean! This is the best £10 i've ever spent, if a friend shown me this, and how well it works. I'd easily expect it to cost £50+.Thank you American Originals for improving a students life. The government may have me over a barrel but at least I can drown my sorrows in delicious and fast burgers!

Love this machine
I love this...I make a veggie burger on one side and on the other side I make a egg..I use the 1 cal spray oil so nothing sticks and it works brilliantly..just have to be careful when I crack the egg so it doesn't run down the hole for excess fat...my veggie burger gets 10 minutes on one side then I turn it over for 5 more..my egg only needs 3 minutes..I actually use a teaspoon to flip them both as it seems to work the best but I take care not to scratch the grill..only one negative thing is actually moulding my veggie burger into the grill without burning my fingers..maybe I need a burger press..all in all I have found it a really good machine..no more smelly smoking frying pans that I have to shallow fry in..I have also found the machine is really easy to clean..but there again I'm not making big greasy animal burgers..yep love my burger maker...I'm now a chilled out cook hehehe

I actually quite like this product but it in no way merits 5 ...
Okay, first - to be clear, I actually quite like this product but it in no way merits 5 stars as many reviews here indicate. My first impressions upon receiving were disappointing. Online it looks as if it is made from sturdy, quality metal but it is plastic and very light. The main hinge has a lot of sideways play giving the overall impression of a poorly made product. Also the non stick surfaces at least in my case didn't stay non stick for very long. After a couple of cleans the plates now stick to everything. I'm not sure why but I suspect the cleaning has introduced micro fissures or similar in the non stick surface that the meat now adheres to.So on to cleaning. A real pain. You need leverage to clean the plates and the unit gets hot so the only place to hold whilst cleaning is the handle - connected to the hinge with a lot of sideways play. It doesn't feel great doing this and it most likely is not doing the hinge any good.So onto cooking. I purchased this as I love burgers but they make such a mess of the cooker/oven/griddle/grillpan/cooker hood with the grease. This was my main driver - burgers with no grease aftermath and it succeeds here. The handle has a culvert on the underside that traps and collects the grease. I'm not sure if it was designed in this way as the edges are positioned correctly to run off into the grease tray but this doesn't really happen. So burgers are cooked very well and no mess that cannot be easily cleaned (non stick plates apart). For the price, I am satisfied but a little more effort and I would pay more and be happier.

Does Not Work
It promised so much and delivered so little, after the first batch of burgers worked fine the second batch stuck to the plates totally destroying the burgers and leaving the plates burnt and requiring heavy cleaning. We don't bother with it and will probably send back for a refund before the return time runs out.

Very Good - Buy It
Fantastic as it cooks on both sides at the same time. Only takes 6 mins or so to cook two burgers and without any spitting of oil what you normally get in a frying pan. Has a small removable drip tray in the front which is great.

Making life easier
I have used this a lot. It was a little tricky at first as my homemade burgers kept sticking. With a little patience and practice, I have now mastered this problem. Simply turning the burgers more often makes them easier to remove from the grill. I have trouble standing for long periods due to a back problem. This item means that I can now cook burgers while sitting down and even while watching the TV!
