Fast, Silent and Well built
Hard drive works well, transferring is fast (read as well as write) and the drive runs silent and cool. The packaging insinuates that this is designed to go alongside a Mac but is this will work with both Mac and PC (I myself actually use it for my Xbox). There is a front cutout which flickers white during operation which is fairly bright but not too bright that it is distracting.Considering that the equivalent Seagate and WD drives are similarly prices, I would highly recommend this over them as I have found it to be slightly faster but have an aluminium enclosure over the others plastic ones (generally feel like a more premium product for the same money.

Stylish and solid + easy set-up [Mac]
GENERAL:I've bought three of these - two were Amazon Warehouse deals. [I'm still amazed that I can even think I need 24Tb of additional storage!]These things look gorgeous and have a really solid feel to them. The power units are interchangeable with my existing Seagate units. No problems so far and I hope the discs will prove reliable.SET-UP:I have a Mac and the front-end utility did make initial install / format / set-up very easy. However the LaCie software that continues to fire up when I mount the disc seems a bit fussy and unnecessary – I think I'll probably disable it if I can.WARRANTY:They say these come with a '2-year' warranty but when I registered mine online the reported expiry dates seemed a bit random. They didn't tie up with either purchase or registration dates. Maybe this was to do with them being Warehouse deals and therefore recognised by the system as not new [warranties expire at 18 and 21 months respectively]. Amazon weren't able to help much with this but they did give me a further discount. The third one, bought new, has a 25-month warranty validity.

Brilliant value for a top of the range drive, perfect for the new 12" retina MacBook.
This drive is simply perfect for the new, 12", retina screened, MacBooks. I had come up against the following: problems while looking for a backup drive to use for my TimeMachine backups for my MacBook.1 - The two new USB 3.0 drives that I tried simply didn't appear on my Mac (in finder, disk utility or system report). This seems to be a problem wither with the low power output from the little MacBooks or due to the necessity of using a USB 3.0 to USB-C adaptor.2 - With only one USB-C port I needed to have a fast drive in order to ensure that the full backup could be made in less time that it takes for the battery to drain. The only other 'cheap' USB-C drive I found had low write speeds, this makes it unsuitable for the MacBook as I ran the risk of draining the battery before completing the backup.3 - Other USB-C drives were incredibly expensive, some costing almost as much as the MacBook itself. This drive is easily big enough to render it decently future proof. It's fast, USB-C compatible and seems solidly built. The exact same drive is currently retailing for £149.99 on the Apple Store (correct as of 18/08/1990) so this model is really fantastic value. The gold colour is not ideal for me as I have a space grey machine. However, due to the fact that the drive has an almost matte aluminium finish, the light reflects off the drive in such a way that unless it's sitting right next to the laptop, it could well be silver (have a look at the photo to see the colour difference). Silver 1TB models are available but for some reason they seem to be more expensive than the 2TB gold model. The drive comes with LaCie's software. However if you're using this on a Mac there is no need for the software. You simply need to reformat the drive in Disk Utility (this takes about 40 seconds) then you're ready to go. I am going to partition the drive to leave 1TB for my Time Machine Backup and 1TB for external storage of large files.Overall this is an excellent drive at really phenomenal value. As usual with Amazon Prime I received the unit less than 24hours after ordering it, what's not to love!

Looks Great and Very Fast!
This is a great looking drive, designed to be portable. It's certainly small and light enough. I use it as a desktop backup drive and to install data on a new iMac. It comes with two cables that are 42cm long plus the plugs at either end. One is USB C to USB C and one is USB C to USB 3. Connected to a Thunderbolt 2 port, the USB C to USB C copies data at the speed of 1 GB every 7 seconds timed with a stopwatch. I wanted to wipe all the Lacie pre-installed software off the drive as I use it with Time Machine. I found Lacie tech support most helpful in telling me the correct way to do this. Finally the drive itself is completely silent; there is one tiny white light that shows when it is powered up, but this is at the back of the drive so will not disturb you.

LaCie disk great disk shame it only lasted 3yrs
Bought this disk on 30 December 2018, I have used for one thing only - a MacBook Pro Time Machine Backup. It is now 12 December 2021, 3 years later and this week it has decided to commit suicide. The disk has just stopped working. First sign of problems was two days ago when my MacBook said it could not repair the disk. Ok, then would not mount it for read/write.However I could also not retrieve the data either using the mac.So today 12-Dec-2021 I have used my Linux machine, it got a little further, but could not read all the data. So a backup drive that is now toast. So it has only lasted 3 yrs bit disappointed in that as the cost was much higher than most other disks at the time.Up until last week it had been a great disk for backup, Only used it last week for the second time to retrieve a file that the system decided that auto-saving on shutting an app down without asking was a good idea ... ahhhh but time machine to the rescue. That was the last time it worked... since then I have not been able to get access.I may just be the unlucky one here, as I also have the LaCie 5tb disks and all have never been a problem.Just this one this week....Real shame as I have never had any issue with LaCie disks. Always preferred them with the Mac as they always seemed better. But like any spinny disk there is always a finite time limit to these devices and I guess that was mine ...So looks like I have to find a better backup solution - yea I bought a 5tb LaCie instead.Hopefully that'll last longer.

The product is well made and performs
I have had at least a dozen different Lacie backup drives and my experience keeps taking by back to their next higher capacity and newer models (I now have 4 of these particular 8TB drives. They may not be the cheapest drives on the market, but they do what they are supposed to do. This drive is referred to as a desktop model, but I carry one of these everywhere I travel. I shoot a lot of photography all over the world and this is where I back up all my information at the end of everyday of shooting. To be candid, I had one of these drives fail back in 2008, when the maximum size one could buy was 1 TB in a portable version. That only took place after very extended use. I use these as backup storage for photography and business documents. In my experience it is never wise to backup to only one drive. Thus losing one long ago, simply keeps me backing up to more than one unit, as a safety precaution. I do not regret being conservative in my thinking; that is to say, backing up t more than one drive. Lacie offers a very inexpensive insurance recovery policy. The charge is just under $15.00 for a five year guarantee that they will repair and recover information from a failed drive, or provide the buyer with a new equivalent drive with the lost information copied to it. I have never had to use this insurance, but one would be foolish not to purchase it when buying new drives.
