An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists (Dover Anatomy for Artists)

Beautifully detailed illustrations showing multiple angles, very good base for creature designers and those with interests in 3d modelling.Only thing I would say is that there is too much focus on the horse and not enough on other species - this would be nitpicking a bit however, because I find that many similar books also focus on the horse as a base - likely something to do with George Stubbs' extensive work and horse anatomy studies in the field.It wouldn't be fair to criticise this book too much on this account, as it's something most anatomy books also do (and a personal bugbear of mine as digitigrade quadrupeds are by far more representative of general mammalia... horses are so highly specialised that many of their features are not applicable to other creatures, so making the lion or the dog the "main" star of such books would make much more sense to me personally)However, I would say that the illustrations on the other species, whilst not as numerous, are all extremely high quality - and also accurate in their posture. I see many books and even mounted skeletons that are incorrect in the stance of the creatures, which is also important for artists.

Brilliant book. I use it for working out proportionality on 3D sculptures. It’s a great aid to creating proportional and realistic animals.

I bought this book to help get proportions right in wool sculptures. The plates are beautiful. It’s a very large book, clear illustrations and several for each animal of different perspectives. As others have said, there are a lot of horses included but plenty of other animals too. Perfect for what I wanted it for but much more interesting and beautiful than I expected.

I bought this book to guide me while I make a sculpture of my own horse. I have been around horses for over 40 years and have a good idea where everything is in this animal, but at home, while making a 3-dimensional creation, it is imperative to know how to make the basic frame for a sculpture portrait.The book is very useful in other areas as well. The illustrations are awesomely detailed and it will remain one of my reference books forever.I would recommend this book for anyone studying animal portraits, vet students, physios etc. Or just any horse owner!

Must have for any artist or even non artist but curious about animal anatomy in general

Most of the book is the anatomy of the horse, dog, cats(lion) and cows These are very detailed plates and show muscle and skeleton. The end of the book is a mish mash of collected plates detailing various animals e,g, bat, monkey but these are only single page plates. Overall very good for the artist and animator but the book is a bit too specialised on just a few animals, especially the horse. If you produce game art then this will be of use.This is pretty much an exercise in making money for the publisher, recycling old anatomy plates and calling it an art reference book. You may be able to find this type of plate on the internet these days. Perhaps a better idea for the publisher would have been to understand the needs of the artist and then produce new work, rather than just recycling old plates.All that being said you may find it handy on the shelf......

Pride of place on the bookshelf.A rabbit is a rabbit and a horse is a horse.Not the same and yet basically share certain characteristics.That's why this book is value for money...always there to answer questions.Another gold nugget in the book section.I really will have to show some restraint and not be tempted to look at the goodies on offer from the wise and gifted of this world whose lifetime knowledge remains in print for future generations.

what a great book for felting shows all you needs regarding the bone mussels great

I found this book through my local library and was impressed enough with the information it contained to purchase a copy to keep. The illustrations are detailed and provide a great overview of the anatomy of several different animals. This would be a great resource for artists who want to increase their understanding of how bones and muscles work together.

Ottimo libro di anatomia animale, tratta benissimo quella del cavallo, meno approfonditamente quella di altri mammiferi.
