May Your Power be Long Lasting
When the dashboard of my car told me that the battery in my key needed replacing, I was worried at first. Where would I find a suitable battery? Would it arrive in time before the old one expired? Would I be stranded at the roadside, and if so does the AA carry a selection of batteries? Well, I need not have worried. My car manual identified that I need a type 2025 cell, and I found this two-pack on Amazon. Of course, that is twice the number of batteries that I actually need, but I wanted to be sure in case I didn't install the first one correctly, and the price didn't seem too bad for the pair. The package arrived promptly, and it looks almost exactly like the Amazon photo, except that it also says in the bottom right "2024". Now that was a bit confusing. In big letters "2025", and in small letters "2024". But on closer inspection, 2024 is marked (in even smaller writing) "Best Before". Phew! On the back it says "Made in Japan for Duracell Batteries", so it appears to be the genuine article. I took one of the cells out of the packaging and inspected it closely. It has a protective self-adhesive layer on the negative terminal which has to be unpeeled before fitting. Don't forget to do that, or it probably won't work. I checked that the diameter is 20mm, but I couldn't find a way to check the thickness, which should be 2.5mm. It looks a bit thinner than that to me, but I guess it is okay. The voltage is supposed to be 3.0V. Using a digital voltmeter, I checked this and got 3.31V. So I got over 10% extra! That must be good, but I hope it doesn't damage my car. Following the car manufacturer's instructions, I fitted the battery to the key fob. This was quite tricky, but I don't need to go into detail here because it isn't relevant to the purchased item. Next step was to walk up to my car (it is "keyless"), and attempt to open the driver's door. Success! And then I started the engine and all seemed good. Since then I have driven my car several times, and all seems fine. Actually the fuel consumption seems to have improved a bit; from an average of 48 mpg my current tank is currently showing 51 mpg. That can't be bad! I don't know how long this battery will last, but the original one that came with the car lasted exactly 2 years. So I will monitor the new one and report back here from time to time. I'm glad I bought two, because if the first one fails I still have 8 years to use the other one. Or does "Best Before 2024" actually mean I have to use it up by the end of 2023? That's a bit confusing, and if I could take off half a star I would, but overall I'm going to award it five stars for now.
