From the Inside Flap The Orange and the Dream of California takes a lively, literary, and extraordinarily visual look at the symbiotic and highly symbolic relationship between the Golden State and its “golden apple,” a pairing that resulted in a compelling fantasy and a fantastic reality. Untold numbers of people came West in the twentieth century lured by postcards showing orange blossoms juxtaposed with snow-capped mountains. And across the country, daily glasses of navel orange juice were a must after Sunkist's Mad Men-style ad campaign spread the word that drinking a California orange was as sweet and delicious as eating one—and held the promise of a healthy life. The dreams created about California were directly enhanced by the orange—and vice versa. In 176 full-color pages and more than 250 images, author David Boulé shares the fascinating story of the orange's impact on the culture—historic, financial, and, yes, romantic—of California. And at the same time, he shows and tells the vivid tale of citriculture—the complex and captivating world of growing the orange and its juicy cousins. History lovers will marvel as Boulé traces the orange's origins back to Southeast Asia, and links the roots of its influence on California all the way back to Califia, a fictional warrior queen whose wild adventures on the exotic island of California turned her name into legend. Cloaked in mystery and available only to the elite until modern times, the orange has been known as the fruit of the gods, the food of emperors, a token of gratitude, and a symbol of health, wealth, and love. From its earliest days, the dream of California has been that it is a place of plenty, of potential, of personal opportunity. And throughout that reverie, the orange has been its symbol. Get ready—The Orange and the Dream of California is for everyone who ever sipped a glass of OJ or bit into the delights of a fresh-picked golden globe. Now David Boulé brings the world of the orange and California to the coffee table. Drink it all in; savor every delicious drop. This is The Orange and the Dream of California.
