Very funny, engaging read for new reader
Perfect reading for a granny and grand-child - short stories just right length. Much better than Oxford reading scheme books - far far more exciting and engaging for the average 6 year old. Stimulating reading on each page, leads children to WANTING to read the next part of the story. Rewarding the new reader with pleasurable, funny and exciting stories. Would give the book an excellent rating - 5-star stuff!. Cannot praise this book highly enough. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Mixed Results - But Mostly Enjoyable
I've just read this out loud to my six-year-old son. It has a reading age of 7+ years (if the child is reading it to themselves) and a scattering of pen-and-ink illustrations. They're not really laugh-out-loud comedic - my son mostly laughed at my sound effects, like when I was imitating a sick dragon taking unpleasant medicine - but they are pacey and lively stories, and on the whole, my son did enjoy them. Most of them are contemporary stories about modern children. There's one folk tale - "Vardiello" - which is more of a Grimm Fairy Tale, but my ninja-loving son was happy with that. The "Melanie Brown" story was from the 1970s, and focused on a classroom television breaking down: - that took a lot of explaining to a modern child who's never seen an analogue television. And having a family of dinosaurs who behave like humans confused him.But generally he listened and related to most of them. And I will look at other anthologies in the series.

Gift for 6 year old
Lovely gift, good stories which means it encourages the child to read them. They are delighted with it and she is starting to understand reading to herself with the help of this type of book. The simplicity of the content is just right

My six year old little boy quickly felt bored reading this as there are no illustrations and it's quite a big and potentially intimidating book - so as a child who needs to be incentivised to read this is probably not the book for him. However, as a massive fan of chapter books (which he is e. g. Famous Five, Roald Dahl etc.) I'm confident that once I've read it to him and he's familiar with the stories, he'll be able to read it back as the print is large and spaced well, and chapters short. But it will be as reading practise, not pleasure, which was the point!

Maybe not for 6 year olds ?
This is a lovely book, but I returned it as I considered it a little too advanced for my (v. bright) 6 year old grandson who would have struggled with some of the vocabulary.

Not funny
Anecdotal and pretty dull I'm afraid didn't amuse my 6 year old at all...kids literature has moved on....well below David walliams level of amusement....I honestly make up more amusing stories by my son's bedside....

Just as described
This book proved to be a good incentive for a new 'I can read it myself' six year old. Vocabulary is just 'stretching' enough to be a challenging without spoiling the story!
