WONDERFUL! NOT A LATINIZED NAME IN SIGHT
Purchased for my great nephew, THIS is the perfect introduction to the Greek Myths. After looking at several publications covering this field, I have been dismayed that the Greek gods and heroes have mostly been referred to by their Roman equivalents: these are NOT GREEK myths. Helpfully, this book gives the Latinized names at the back, but correctly re-tells the stories in their original. It is important for young readers to be able to differentiate between the two. There are six myths included which, if a child shows keen interest, will lead him/her to further reading and study. As a starter to that interest, I recommend the Illustrated Stories from the Greek Myths highly. The illustrations are bright and plentiful and the language modern and simple. My book arrived very quickly and well packed.

Beautiful book!
A smaller book than I thought it would be but a decent retelling of all the main Heroes and Legends and well suited to KS1 and KS2 children. Great illustrations. Would make a lovely gift.

Brilliant - so well written!
Our family love this book. We'd borrowed a copy from the library despite me thinking it was a bit old for my boys (3 and 4) and they thoroughly enjoyed it. The stories are written in chapters which are short enough to keep even the then-2-yr-old's attention and there is plenty of drama. The illustrations don't take over from the text. My boys have enjoyed listening without being able to see the pictures at all. The ancient myths are pitched well for children but haven't been stripped of their power. Now - with my teacher hat on - this is an EXCELLENT book. I wish I had had a copy when teaching about Ancient Greece to junior classes. The text is so well-planned and structured. The vocabulary and sentence structure are great - there is variety and precision. We're home-schooling and I expect this will become a key model text. USBORNE - do not stop printing this book. Or print lots more from the same authors. Please!

An excellent book full of fantastic tales.
I bought this book for my five year old son. I loved these fantastic stories when I was a little boy so I thought he might like them too. I got home from work at 3.30pm and opened the package, planning to have a quick glance through with him. Two and half hours later we had read the whole book together, with him literally begging for more. (I would have read it all again if if hadn't have been his bedtime!) He was awake early the next morning, asking me to read the stories to him again. It's a fantastic book, full of these wonderful ancient tales, with just enough monsters and gore to thrill a little boy without upsetting him, and the stories of gods and heroism have completely caught his imagination. We both thoroughly recommend this book to young children and parents everywhere!

Lovely book
An excellent book. Smaller than I was expecting, but that may be because I didn’t read the measurements properly! I actually like the smaller size - it’s easier to manage as a book to read to my son rather than the larger A4 size. There are plenty of illustrations in the book which include lots of colour. This is nice because long reams of text can be dull for primary age children. The text itself is split into short paragraphs which are suitable for young readers (I would say Y3). There are six stories in the book, each of which are split into short chapters. At the end of the book there is a short section dedicated to the Greek Gods. I really like this book and it’s a great introduction to the Greek Myths. I’d recommend it for primary age children. Older children probably need something with more detail.

This book (like others in the series) is very well put together, in terms of the content choice, editing for children, and illustrations. It's great fun reading stories that are so well-known and meaningful, rather than the usual mass-produced garbage. My kids have brought this book to me, requesting that we read "the next one" or finish he longer story that we started yesterday. The ribbon to mark your place is a nice touch. With very young children, I do find myself having to gloss over some of the violence and death (there is not a great deal) using different words to soften the story in places, but as the kids grow I think we will return to these stories and have a more honest go at them. Frankly, I prefer the honesty to the original story over an otherwise sugar-coated account.

I bought several of the Usborne books with collections of various stories, and they really are wonderful. Some have more illustrations, others fewer. But all are beautiful. The simple and yet engaging way they retell these great stories is also perfect for younger kids. Mine is 5.5, but these would easily have worked a year ago and they can be read for several years to come. They use not so simple language but perfect for first/early readers at the same time. So I cannot say enough about how good and on point they are. This one on the Greek myths is really great and full of illustrations. Covers many of the old stories, but don't forget they can be quite tough stories (death and the like).

These books are fine My son is a few months shy of 7 and knew nothing of the Greek myths before this book. Reading it to him i was suprised how much was left out of the tales and would probably have purchsed something else had i leafed through it in a store first, but for him they opened a world of history and mystery and he enjoyed it. There a good way to dip a toe into the mythos but so much is missing. The whole last section of the book other than the map is just pointless and should have been an extra myth. I dont regret the purchase, it was a fun weeks worth of bed time stories, that my son enjoyed. But i am now immediatly looking for another book that covers a little more
