It is about the photos...
People who pour over technical specs for the latest, greatest gear, and then "trade up" every few months to get more mega-pixels, or ten percent more sharpness from a new lens, should buy this book. It will remind you that it is about the photos, not the gear. The date range of this volume would indicate that all of these shots were made on film. The most basic digital camera today would have better high ISO noise than many of the shots in this book, yet it just doesn't matter... it is about the photos. A lot of the photos are less crisp than some quantifiable degree of sharpness as measured in some test program on some computer, yet they are terrific. These are a very good representation of a period in time of a major city. They are laid out in non chronological order, to present common things or to juxtapose subjects to make a point. All of the photos are annotated with the year the image was made, which I liked a lot since I guess I am of a similar age of the photographer, and I recall the clothes, the hair, and the styles in many of the shots.Buy this book. Study this book. Then, go out and take photos. It is about the photos.

Wonderful and nostalgic
Not only are these photos terrific from a technical sense - and the b&w makes them even more potent - but they also provide a superb look back at a certain era in this city. On a personal note, most of them were taken during my first several years in NYC and therefore the nostalgia is powerful - but anyone who loves cities and appreciates a huge variety of candid photos will surely love this book.**For those of you in metro NYC**: There will be a book launch on October 19 from 7-9 p.m., at the powerHouse in Brooklyn (RSVPs are mandatory).

This Book is Boring--If That is Possible with NYC Streets.
Seriously, I returned it and I never return books. It is like the same emotion in every photo and there is no rhyme or reason to the way they are organized. The photos are of poor quality and not in a gritty, capture the essence of the street, kind of way. I love street photography and NYC and these just were not good or moving. Also, they weren't arranged in ways that you could see either a range of emotion or the evolution of the City and its people over time. I wanted to love it as much as I love the City, but nope. Sorry :(

Must Buy Book
I can't say enough good things about this book! The photos are beyond a normal vantage, and capture the essence and emotion of each setting. To see New York through such a talented eye - dating back to the 70's - is more than just history, but a connection to the environment and the people captured in that moment. It is such a special collection of photographs, from talent that seems to be overlooked but always desired when considering an artist, aiming to preserve more than just the surface of her surroundings. To have and hold this book is more than a way to see what New York was through its past, but to experience a piece of what life was in it's time. You won't be disappointed. Carrie's work in Street is profoundly moving.

Great city photographs
This book of photographs gives a wonderful cross section of city living and episodes. When viewing these pictures, you know where you are and have to admire the photographers choices and angles. Using a collection from past decades, and labelling each shot, gives you an idea of just how much things have changed.

A legend in Street Photography.
Carrie Boretz, is an incredible street photographer and this book puts her up there with the legends. Not a single page is wasted in this photo book. If you're an aspiring street photographer in search of some inspiration, I would highly recommend this book. Carrie's book will be sitting right next to my copy of Bruce Davidson's "Subway" as some of my favorites.P.S.I ordered two copies, one will remain in plastic. ππ½

Loved this book! It is a must have!
I loved this book! It truly captured each of the time periods in New York and make you feel as though you were there experiencing it right along side Carrie. She captured such beautiful moments that are just both breathtaking and memorizing. As a 30 year old I personally loved seeing New York back then and comparing it to present day. I highly recommend this book!
