A guide to the Leica style of photography
I think the previous reviewer bought the wrong book. They should perhaps have bought: Leica M (Lark Photography Book) by Günter Osterloh - that is a definitive guide to all Leica M film cameras and their use. Very good it is too.In the first section of Leica M6 to M1: Rangefinder Practice, in what may be referred to as an introduction, describes what this book is about: "This handbook, in dealing with the Leica M6 in particular and the M-Range in general, is a guide to the Leica style of photography."And that is what it does. I've even found useful ideas for when I'm out with my Hasselbald Xpan. So, think of this book as a rangefinder photography guide, based mainly around the Leica M6 and you can't go far wrong.

Don't expect a 'how to' book but more a description of the system and the best way to use it
Got this little book to go with the rest of my books on Leicas. It's only limitation is that it goes upto the M6, but that said it's a handy little book.Don't expect a 'how to' book but more a description of the system and the best way to use it. After all if your buying one of these cameras then your already past basic amature photography, so you should already know about death of field, hyper focal focusing, lens and shutter speed settings.Interesting book though.

Brilliant to have got hold of this little piece of camera history, and really useful for learning to use an M6.

Leica M6 to M1
A very good overview of the Leica M range of rangefinder cameras, published at the time of the Leica M6.

Who is this book aimed at?
From the title, I was anticipating a book that outlined the Leica M Range in detail allowing a comparison between the different models. Well this book does not do that.It has information on each of the models, but not in great detail. There is a discussion on the accessories and lenses available - but again, not in great detail.Rather curiously, it does talk about how to take photographs - such as the principles of depth of field and which speed to use for a given subject etc. Frankly, that stuff is better covered in books on photographic techniques. There is a discussion of using rangefinder cameras - but not of the uniqueness of the Leica system e.g. the quietness of the shutter etc.I would suggest this book is aimed at someone who is new to photography and has decided that a Leica rangefinder is for them. But at £1400 upwards for a new camera - how many people do you think would fall into this category?
