ST-EF500 3 x 7 Speed Bike Shift/Brake Lever set

Ordered these to replace grip twist shifters. The package arrived on time and in good condition. I'm no expert but they seem like genuine Shimano shifters (compared to the quality of a previous set I bought from China on ebay which basically fell apart after a week) and they came in a Shimano box. Also included were Shimano branded gear cables and pre cut housings as well as Shimano branded brake cables and housings with end ferrules and cable crimps, which I did not expect, especially at this price. They are on the cheaper end of the Shimano spectrum, however they still seem well made, easy to install (plenty of videos online, Park tool videos are very good) and the shifting is reasonably smooth when dialled in properly. Overall these represent great value for money :)

Fitted to my elderly hybrid bike to replace the original gear/brake combo levers, which had suffered 18 years' wear and tear. Straightforward to install, the levers work well. My only (very minor) concern is the ordering of the gear numbers on the 7 speed (right hand) shift which are in descending order (7 to 1) against the ascending order of the bike gears themselves, but since the lever shifts the gears in the way I would expect them to (front lever up, rear lever down) it's of little consequence. Overall, a good purchase, I'm happy with it.

Good value. One thing to note is that the right shifter (7 speed) does not have a cable tension barrel adjuster. The left shifter does which I find strange? Why not on both? So you will have to rely on your rear derailleur to adjust the tension. My rear mech has a tensioner so not a deal-breaker, but would have been easier to have this on the shifter.

Easy to fit and work very well. Sons gears now work on his bike also replaced the awful grip shift type which I cant actually believe became a thing as they expose the wrist to possibility of being injured whilst changing gear.

Nice set of brake lever/shifter units for upgrading an old MTB for my eldest. Both the brakes and shifters now work great. Tried to buy another set for my bike and now they don't seem to be available any longer... Shame as they work great.

Very poor item could not change gear cable properly

My old shifters had been through a lot and one of them, in one spectacular accident, had even survived piercing my thigh. These came with the gear cables already attached. They were easy to install. I’d recommend having a repair stand if you’re going to buy these as you will need to adjust your gears and brakes.
